So, my wife wants to become a professional bookkeeper. She already has a MBA but not from the USA. She figures bookkeeping is the thing for her as it doesn't involve too much stress and hopefully flexible hours.

She has looked into some sites and found that it is best to get certified from "the american institute of professional bookkeepers":

Any advice you have for her? Any professional bookkeepers here? Are the job prospects good in this field?

Tell her not to waste her time, certified bookkeeper means nothing. In accounting the only certificate that maters is the CPA, she would be much better off studing for and passing the CPA exam. Some of her MBA schooling should meet the education requirement, although she may still have to take a few classes.

Besides with her level of education, taking the bookeepers certification would be like a college graduate taking the GED

Not so fast GuitarDaddy. I know a friend who works as the head of a library and although the pay is shabby the benefits make the job really sweet.

Not knocking a head librarian job, but I would think even a foreign MBA would be more than enough to qualify for that job, assume a full command of the english language.
Foreign MBA > Certified bookeeper IMHO

I'm assuming the MBA your wife has is from an accredited university taking at least 5 years of higher education. I realize in some lesser developed countries an MBA is a much lower level degree probably about equal to a certified bookeeper in the US, if this is the case then the bookeeper cert makes more sense

One of my many part-time jobs is that I do bookkeeping for a computer consultant who is a tech genius but a zero at the office side of things. My qualification for this job is that I've owned many businesses, I know Quickbooks, I understand the tech brain, and I know how to work with an accountant. I drop by a couple times a week, when I feel like it.

I know a lot of moms who do bookkeeping for exactly the reasons that your wife has.

I suggest that she call a few temp agencies and find out what skills are most in demand.

thx for the advice.she thought abt CPA too. but its a long way to go.will b very much thankful if we get more guidance regarding the book keeping and aipb certification.

Not all states have the 150 credit hour requirement. I *think* Delaware has relaxed requirements.
