My wife wants a 2011 Mustang GT

Kabob

So, my wife comes from a Ford loving family and she's always wanted a Mustang. Well, when we heard about the 2011 she started dropping hints (ok, so not really hints as much as blatant "suggestions" about checking 'em out). This past Saturday we headed to a Ford dealership and test drove a maroon specimen.

Now she's really hooked and wants to trade in her Impreza WRX for a GT Premium w/Brembo package, 3.73 axle, and interior appearance package...I'm just not sure we can afford it. I liked the car although I've never been much for pony cars, I've always liked the more nimble sports cars.

Anyone know what dealer cost (or what I can expect to pay pre-tax) for a similarly equipped car would be? They're seem to be selling quite well so I'm not sure how much I can push them...

Does it have to be a 2011? I know its the newest and meanest 5.0 out to date, but maybe the 2010 GlassTop would be enough. The glasstop is awesome if you ask me

Your wife wants a GT?! She gets a thumbs up in my book. 😉

On a serious note though, if there's any question about you guys not being able to afford it, don't get it (yet). Brakes, suspension, and other service items are likely going to be significantly more expensive. You'll also blow through a lot more gas. So, the initial price isn't the only factor, and this could quickly turn into a marriage-ending situation (ok, a little dramatic, but I've seen it happen).

You should both save some cash and look again next year when they're 1 year old AND you have a fairly substantial down payment to throw down. In regards to the pony car vs. nimble sports car debate, unless you're only considering a S2000 / MX-5 (Miata) / 911 / Corvette / Elise, you might be fairly surprised by the Mustang. I forget which group did it, but there's an around-the-track comparison of the 2011 Mustang GT vs. 2011 M3. It was surprisingly very close, and the driver commented on how well the Mustang felt - not as refined as the M3, but very acceptable overall. Yay for solid axles. 😀

Hey Kabob, I wish my wife wanted a New Mustang GT. Although, I'm not sure we could afford it either. If I were you, I would take her back to the Dealership and let her drive a similarly equipped V6 Mustang. They will be significantly less expensive and they get much better gas mileage. I don't think she will notice much power difference unless she is doing some really spirited driving. Just my 2 cents.

+1 for waiting for a used one. Plus, it's the first model year of a significant drivetrain update. I have faith in Ford, but it's just another check in the column of "wait."

someone posted a link to a mustangforum not too long ago that had a dealer contact out west who could order you one for a great price and you pick it up at your local dealer.

My wife ♥'s horsepower. She loves sportbikes, racing (the non-NASCAR sort), etc. Very atypical.

OK, let me rephrase, we have the cash to go buy one without financing if we wanted to and still be fine, BUT she also wants to buy a house in the next year or two (we're still in an apartment, another negative for having to park in a lot, albeit in a decent part of town).

And for the record I"ve always been a Porsche guy, that's where my "handling perspective" comes from! 😀

We talked about this as well, she really wants the V8. Honestly I think we'd be fine with the 6 until the fateful day she pulled up to the light next to someone with a V8...

It's like a Corvette vs. a Z06, no one "needs" the Z06 for the street and inside it's nearly identical, it's just got that little bit extra.

See above post.

I am all for buying a used one, for her it's a "stage of life thing." She sees it as an opportunity to not only own her dream car, but to own it at a time when she thinks we can afford it AND have no kids/major commitments. For her buying now is worth the massive depreciation that's surely to come.

Hrm, anyone got more info on this?

Wait wait. She has a WRX and she wants a Mustang GT. Double thumbs up in my book.

Yeah, the WRX was her pick as well, she loves that car but is willing to "sacrifice" (if you can call it that) it for a GT.

You'd get a kick out of my buddy's wife as well, she is even more of a car lover than my wife and has her own C6Z (which she did a track day in a few weeks ago). The two of them are at a car lot on average maybe 3 nights a week.

I think I actually found it linked on a page that someone linked to.

I did some looking around and IIRC this is the page -

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/price-ford/215183-2011-mustang-order-guide.html

I only read the thread and maybe another he has but it seemed like a legit way to get a good deal or at least good pricing to bounce off your local dealer.

Thanks for digging that up, I'll check it out for sure!

I had a 2009 Mustang GT/CS when the new 2011 came out. With interest rates so low and the dealer giving me a great price for the 2009.

I got a 2011 GT/CS with Nav and absolutely love it. To get top horse power rating you need to run premium gas but it doesn't feel too different with regular though.

I never drove the V6 but the 5.0 is hard to pass up.

You are a lucky man when your wife wants a car like a Mustang GT. As for cost, you are looking around $30,000 for decently equipped GT.

You missed out recently in the bay area, CA, there was a deal where they were giving massive discounts for the GT. That would've been great to fly out to buy one, then drive it back home.

good luck with your purchase.

My wife wanted to get the new Camaro SS with the 6MT but I talked her out of it. 🙂

I have a 2010 GT and love it. I actually drove a 2011 GT, but something about the M6 being made in China put me off to it.
The engine was great, but I just don't trust the longevity of a Chinese made transmission behind a 400+ hp engine.
It would be one thing if there was a history with it that could back it up, but there isn't.

Thanks all for the kind words, I know my wife's a keeper! 🙂

Aww man, she'd have died (in a good way) for a trip like that.

I'm sorta in the same shoes, she's all for it and I'm the hesitant one. As for the MT the only car she's ever owned that wasn't a MT she got for free, her dad taught her on a MT and she loves 'em.

Hrm, didn't realize it was a Chinese made transmission, I liked the feel of it (although I'm so used to the stiff, positive feedback feel of the WRX tranny). Is there any evidence to suggest that it won't hold up though?

You're lucky she wants her own ponycar. Mine just kept leaving melted rear tires all over the rear fenderwells and bumper of *my* old 5 liter.

Though she's starting the strong hinting re: 2011 GT for herself as well. Good thing we have preschoolers that I can use as an interior trashing excuse (although they loved having my old stang all summer and didn't trash it in the least) to keep from having either a gigantic new monthly payment or empty bank account.

If the 6-speed is a Tremec, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's not, that's another point to be concerned about.

Then again, if you aren't dropping the clutch off the line or shifting like a monkey on crack, I wouldn't be too worried.

She's a keeper! Get one!

I was driving through I-5 near Stockton Saturday and i saw the butt of a Pontiac G8 GT and i wanted to see who was driving it ... asian woman in her mid 20s. She rocked.

The 6 speed in the 2011 models is a Getrag, which has made good stuff, but outsourcing it to China is always hit or miss.
But it is really just to early to tell how good this 6 speed is.
