She currently has a dragonfly above her right knee pic and wants to get a triquetra, the Charmed symbol, but with four colours over her right shoulder blade. Her first tattoo was $45 two years ago, but she only tipped him $5 because he was the owner. This artist is here in town and said it would be $50 to $100 based on a $100 per hour rate. How much to tip?

Where on the upper back is a good spot for it? Any suggestions on size? She is thinking it should be 60% if you use the browser print preview function to view it, large enough that the colours don't bleed together.

Edit: The new guy is apparently the co-owner of the shop. It's not just tattoos tho, he does piercing plus they sell natural soaps, lotions, massage products, candles, incense and wicca stuff.

10% is a good number, maybe less.

obviously depends on how much you just dropped on the tat.

Since your screen may vary, to get the true size go to print preview on the browser and size it at 60%. That is the size it would be on paper/skin.

Just bring in the color scheme you want in any decent size and the artist will draw it properly for you. If you go to a tat shop where the artists do not offer to sketch or modify the design, then you should leave.

As for a tip, it depends on how well you know the artist and how good he is.

For the first tattoo she called first then brought in an ink jet print out of the dragonfly. The guy swiped a gel from a deodorant stick type dispenser on her skin and pressed the paper down to transfer the design. He then traced the outline and filled in the colour. That guy was out of state and no longer has a shop.

Why would you tip for a tattoo? The person doing the work gets most if not all of the cost of work in the first place. That's like tipping the gas station workers for ringing up your purchase.

I have one tat that I had done back in 2000. My tat was $150 and I tipped the guy $25 because he gave me a great deal since we had a mutual good friend. Even without the mutual connection, I would have still tipped him. He was a nice guy, drew up a custom piece based on what I brought it, did a great job and even if he's collecting 100% of the tat money, he still has bills to pay like the rest of us. Regardless of the services rendered, if someone does a good job and has a good attitude to go with it, then I tip.

Don't forget to tip the guy watching and the guy who holds the door for you on the way in. Then, when you get home, tip the dog for not ripping up your stuff and tip the neighbor for not stealing anything while you were out.

After I do a good tattoo, I prefer a good shag rather than money. Keep that in mind.

Unless the waitress is making $3 per hour as allowed by law, I don't tip. Actually, I guess I do tip on haircuts and massages too. But tips for a tatoo? What is this world coming to? :p
