I'm fairly new to PC Gaming, but growing more and more addicted with every new game I purchase. Well I mentioned to my wife that I was thinking about buying UT2K3. I'm normally not into the 1st person shooters so I figured I'd wait until I found a great deal. Today we had a package delivered, she had bought the game off eBay for approx. $20. In all my excitement I opened the game and didn't notice any problems until I opened the instruction manual. The game is a non-English version for sale in Taiwan only. According to the description on eBay, the box and manual are not in English; however, the game is completely in English. My wife admitted that she overlooked this minor detail and I assured her that it shouldn't be a problem, who reads the manuals anyways.

Well, now that I'm at work and she has no idea that I'm asking this... Will there be a problem installing this onto my PC. I don't have any experience with buying software from outside the US and I just built a new gaming PC so I don't want to screw anything up. Will I run into any problems or should I run out and buy another copy w/o telling the wife???

Thanks,
P

if you opened the game already, you should try to install the game and watch out for the 'language' field during installation setup and see if you can change the language or not.. btw, that's just my wild guess, you might wanna give it a try.. if that doesn't work, you can always abort game installation.. i remembered i saw a language field during ut2k3 installation, but i didn't play around with language setting(since i got the english version), so i don't really know if changing language works or not..

Do games have region codes like dvds? I know that some if not all dvdroms/cdroms allow you to use dvds with any region code but after a designated amount of times the drive locks the player to a specific region. I'd assume if games have region codes like dvds, after a few times switching between my other games and UT2K3, the drive could lock into the Taiwan region code, and then would be inaccessible by my other games. Can anyone verify this or are there any other issues that may arise if I install this non-English version of the game?

PC games do not have region codes, the only things that has is console games and dvd's so that won't be a problem.

And the only problem I can think of anyway is that the menus and text in the game might be in taiwanese, it shouldn't change anything in your windows setup unless you opt to install a local version of DirectX if the one you've got installed isn't up to date (the game checks if it is during install if it isn't it'll ask you if you want to update).

Actually some games do have "region codes" - Quake II being a perfect example.

I have a copy of the UK version of the game (I am British) - when I lived in Hong Kong and used HK settings for my PC it would not allow the game to run without changing the region settings.

I use UK settings here in the USA also - apart from the time zone settings and paper for those pesky US paper sizes.....time you guys came into the future with the A-series ;)

Yeah, I would be more concerned about if the person kept the CDkey and sold the game

Well I guess I'll suck it up and install the game when I get off work. If anyone doesn't think this is a good idea please let me know.

Thanks,
