The wife is pretty into this for cooking these days in place of a lot of things, but has found another cheaper one locally.

"shortening" is a generic term covering all solid fat. It's become more specialized to refer to hydrogenated oil. If I were reading an old recipe book, I wouldn't automatically assume vegetable. In fact, I'd probably assume lard.
I don't eat much bacon these days but when I used to buy boxes of bacon ends and pieces I'd render the fat and store in a bottle in the refrigerator and use it as shortening in recipes. It has a nice bacon flavor.

For some reason I bothered to read the whole story, and you sound incredibly condescending, pedantic, and generally annoying. No wonder your wife doesn't pay any attention to you. Aside from that, you showed no ability to constructively solve the problem. This could have all been resolved by you either:

A) Ordering vanilla extract online instead of the damn beans

There's nothing wrong with still wanting to make your own extract. In that case:

B) Going with her on the town to hunt down the small bottles. If that is fruitless, then stop by and buy the vanilla sugar. Make a morning out of it, grab breakfast/lunch; enjoy the time together.

Come on guys, relationships are not that hard. Just requires a little effort. Well, that and having a little respect for your S/O in the first place.

That isn't thread material. This story was embellished for comedic effect. Everyone does stupid shit, and it's a popular topic of discussion. Ignoring/whitewashing the small irritations of life eliminates a major source of conversation.

True; however, I'm not talking about whitewashing or ignoring the small irritations, I'm talking about eliminating them altogether. I'd rather an irritation-free life than have stories to tell. Problems will always come, no point unnecessarily adding more.

As far as I can see this drama was created by the wife and continually exacerbated by an obtuse husband. It could have been diffused at multiple points if they'd tried to solve the problem together rather than sticking to their guns and taking pot shots at each other.

I think we can all agree the most important thing is that the vanilla cinnamon rolls must flow.

Vanilla sugar is a much dumber way to get vanilla than vanilla extract. You want to be able to control the amount of vanilla flavor separate from the amount of sugar. Sugar is chemically important in baking and if you are bound to a specific vanilla/sugar ratio you have way less flexibility.

Cream of Tartar aka potassium bitartrate was popularized by the French. I'm kind of surprised it's not available in Scandinavia.
