many many things you did wrong, luckily you were not dealing with experienced criminals.

1) you should really always keep the doors to the home locked if no one is outside...even if you carry someone can easily get inside and camp out. It happens a lot all over the country now.

2) you should have called the police instantly...now there really isn't anything they can do....one is sound fishy and two the criminals know nothing happened the first time plus have the added benefit of knowing how the victims will react.

If you were dealing with some shady guys I have run into in my past at least one or more of your family would been in ICU or worse .

There was a church guy killed here over $20 (paid to four guys to steal a Mustang GT)...the idiots shot him inside the car so he couldn't identify them...well they messed up the car because of that. This was over only $20 split 4 ways.

It is a sad thing like this happens.

But what make you think that you can take out all of arms robbers, before one of them take your love one out?

Well, I live in Colorado and things are a little different here. We have a law called the "Make my day law." Basically, if someone breaks into your house you are free to shoot them dead without fear of either civil or legal repercussions. I would gladly exercise that right. Just a couple of weeks ago my girlfriend woke me up in the middle of the night and said she heard someone in the house. I immediately grabbed a gun and went and checked it out. If there would have been someone there, I would have shot first and asked questions later. My safety and the safety of my family are way more important to me than the life of some punk.....

And in this situation, what impression has the OP given to these lowlifes? They are in complete control now. Just like in nature, if you are perceived to be weak and afraid, you are going to be a target......

But your scenario and what happened to him are not the same. You had time to get your gun. He was pretty much ambushed in his own house. In his situation you would have no time to get your gun. Unless your always strapped while in your house.

There is little to no reason not to call the cops. Fear of retaliation is the least of your worries when the criminals have already proven that they don't need a reason to attack you.

I actually read the whole thread...wow. I also think you should get a shotgun, but I have heard people talking about getting a permit. Do you really need a permit to get a rifle or shotgun in NYC? If so that is even worse than California. Get a home defense synthetic stock shotgun, short barrel, tube extension....load the tube up alternating buckshot and slugs (or all buckshot is good too). If someone breaks into your home and they here the "cha-beloved patriot" of a 12-gauge getting a 00 buckshot loaded into the chamber, they WILL be scared. I don't know you personally but I'm glad to hear you are physically ok.

The only advice I would give you is to listen to your mother and not a bunch of strangers on a forum who have absolutely no idea about the realities of your situation. That doesn't mean I agree with her, but I would bet that she is more likely to be taking your safety and well-being into account when making a decision about what to do.
