You're welcome.

I don't think you'll need the gastric stuff. The primary problem is the way in which we eat. You shouldn't be eating 3 meals a day to loose weight. You should never be hungry:) You should eat six small meals a day. Your body is in starvation mode-you need to change how and when you eat and start working those muscles HARD-this walking isn't going to work.

You need strenuous exercise. Walking to work is good - keep doing it. But it obviously isn't working. Get a gym membership and go at a minimum 3-4 times per week, for at least 30 minutes of hard cardio each time. If your joints can't take jogging, use the bike or eliptical machine. You need to get huffing and puffing and drenched in sweat. Additionally if you have the time start lifting weights. More muscle raises your metabolism. But the weight lifting DOES NOT replace cardio. It only supplements it in your situation.

And yes, don't think about starving yourself. Your body will slow its metabolism down, which is quite possibly what's going on now. Also make sure you're drinking a LOT of water. Near a gallon a day at your current size.

Finally, biking burns a whole lot of calories if you do it hard. The same as anything does if you do it hard. For me I can bike hard for a good 1.5 hours without any extreme difficulty. I can jog for maybe 30 minutes. I highly doubt jogging burns 3x as many calories as biking.

I've thought about bikes, but it seems that walking burns more than biking. Also, I feel like my weight would probably ruin most bikes I could afford really fast. . .

You'd be surprised. Bikes are generally very tough. Get a decent hybrid bike or a mtb or even a good road bike and you'll get many many trouble free miles out of it. I'd recommend checking out the used market for a name brand bike and stay away from the department store bikes.

As others have said, use Fitday

It's an invaluable tool for anyone trying to gain or lose weight.

Second, if that really is how many calories you consume, my guess is you are consuming far too little calories, and your body has responded by going into "starvation mode", and slowed down your metabolism considerably. If you are doing all of that activity and only consuming 1800 calories per day, that could be the problem.

I would also recommed checking out the link in my sig, the people on that board are very helpful.

after looking closer I kind of agree with this.

He does need to keep up the cardio but he should also make sure his metabolism is kept up by the foods he eats and the time he eats them. the 6 small meals a day spaces roughly 2-3 hrs appart should do the trick. You need to eat to lose weight. As backwards as it sounds its true. If you starve yourself, which I think youre doing, your body goes into starvation mode where it stores every fat it can to use later because it doesnt know when it will be fed next.

bikes are easy until you hit a hill or loose gravel trail. It may be time to switch up your routine a bit and try something new.

Also, are you sleeping enough? Some people gain weight when they are stressed/lack enough sleep etc.

He said he is walking currently. This means he has some decent leg muscles and his joints cant be in that bad of shape. As long as he builds up to it then there wont be problems. Swimming would be ideal but I dont know if he has access to that, anyone can go outside and run.

Are you sure your calorie intake is 1600 - 1900 calories per day? Can u make a list of absolutely EVERYTHING you eat tomorrow and post it up. (Even if you eat say 1 almond for example include it, and ALL fluids, juices, colas, etc...) post that up, or PM me. I went from 278 to 198lb and just recently bulked (to gain muscle to 228lbs) and am cutting once again. I will help you out as much as possible granted your willing to learn and do what it takes. Also if possible write down the times at which u eat what you do.

Well lets just say his body is in starvation mode, then his body would be using up his muscle first (which is bad) before going on to his fat. Either way he should be losing weight with that little calorie intake.

Your lower body has prolly a lot of muscles to support your weight, but 65% of the muscles are in upper body. Muscle naturally burns fat, try training your upper body with dumbells, benchpress, etc..

Here is my advice:

#1 SEE A DOCTOR. Get your adrenal glands checked and such. This seems far too weird you are putting on weight if what you said is true. Maybe diabetes or thyroid related or otherwise. Get your bloodwork done. Might cost you something, but worth it.

If you are, by most accounts, healthy according to the doctor, then this is what you should do:

- Eat 6 meals, each 400 calories. Space them out 3 hours apart. Eat on a schedule, daily. Boring, but worth it.

- Your last meal (immediately before bed) should consist of good fats and proteins--1 cup of cottage cheese and walnuts is great.

- Drink lots of water throughout the day. 3 Litres minimal (given your size).

- Do 60 minutes of intense cardio each day (provided you and your family don't have heart or lung problems... make sure you can handle it!)

- 3 days a week throw in some weight lifting, compound exercises ONLY. Squat, bench, military press, etc.

Consume lots of protein.

Carbs aren't bad either--you need them. But eat good, clean carbs--not foods high in sugar. Eat oats, brown long grain rice, and a slice of brown bread each day.

Add in egg whites, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt (no sugar added variety). Eat tuna, NATURAL peanut butter (not too much, its dense), chicken and turkey. Eat raw veggies like brocolli and celery. I wouldn't eat carrots as they have more than preferable carbs.

You might have put your body into some sort of stasis by UNDERfeeding it.

Remember: eat often; eat clean.

I'm willing to help you if you have any questions.

well not in bad shape, but excess stress on the joints cant be good. not worth the risk. swimming would be best.

I thought that after being in starvation mode, the body will convert additional food into fat to protect it against the same problem. If that is the case, then he would just be regaining anything he lost.

you need to raise your body's basal metabolism. Eat smaller meals, but more often (5 times a day). Also, try to get exercise in every few hours.

Good lord, you're eating 1800 calories a day and wonder why you're not losing weight?! FFS you'd think someone who has been obese their entire life might have picked up a damn book at least once and read something about fat loss. You need to eat more! ALOT MORE! At your height, weight, age and activity level your maintenance is 4163 calories. To lose weight you want to eat 300 - 600 below that number, so you pretty much need to double your daily food intake.

Edit - hmm having looked at that figure it seems something is wrong with the BMR calculator I was using. However your real maintanance is around 3400 calories, still significantly more than what you are currently eating. Please, please raise your daily calorie level to 2800 calories, that is the only way you will see results.

hmm, My mom is a professional personal trainer (including helping people with diet) and pilates instructor...

I work out with her a bit and get advice from her. That being said I know basically nothing compared to her, but, I know she claims white breads/cereals (esp. stuff like Captin Crunch, etc...) are the devil.

Here is sample of some the things she suggested for me to eat, which i only do sometimes :/

Real oatmeal (not packaged sweatend stuff) & mix in a good amount cottage cheese -- Don't add sugar!
Tuna is awesome
Chicken is awesome -- but preperation is important ... Boiled Chicken + real rice (NOT crappy white or instant rice!)
Don't bother with Iceberg lettuce ... use something like Spinich instead.
Don't eat pasta at night, carbs that late arent good.

This one I like, snack food...
Multigrain slice of bread, can of tuna on it, grated cheese on that and toss err in the oven for a bit till the cheese melts, its good for a snack.
Little carb (Bread), lots of protien (Tuna) and a bit of fat (Cheese)

Also, at your weight, (some people suggested it earlier) running probably isn't good for you. Walking is good and actually does burn just as much running (it just takes alot longer) ... though it doesn't have the cardio benifits either. Use a bike at the gym or those x-trainers (sort of like running) -- your knees will thank you. Lift weights! This will help with your metabolism though it might cause a increase in body weight in the short run. If you can afford it, get a good personal trainer -- but make sure they are educated and not just some idiot at the gym basically giving out advice (sort of like me right now). Most don't really know what they are doing, they're just people who work out lots and think that because they are in shape they are qualified to help other people get in shape.

Doctors, some are good, others, arent -- probably depends what kind of doctor... I know my mother trains doctors and she claims most are clueless in this area -- she had a GP come to her for backpain, he just didn't know how to "fix" the problem.

Anyways, that being said, cliffnotes of my uneducated adviced are:
-- Continue working on your diet (you should try to get help from a professional as well)
-- Go to the Gym and hire a "good" personal trainer if you can afford it (this is your life, so costs shouldn't matter much) but do shop around for a good one, the good ones can be expensive
-- Some personal trainers have there own studios/gyms and it is 100% 1-1 with no other people around then you won't feel like lots of people are watching you -- I love this having a place to yourself to work out in so awesome, just you and the trainer.

PS. Don't get scammed into the marketing of some of those weightloss programs you probably hear on the radio... and again becareful choosing a personal trainer -- you don't want to waste money on a crappy one.

don't drink any sodas....even if it is diet coke.

I heard that the drinking diet coke tricks your body into thinking it is getting energy from the sugar that would come from a normal coke and ultimately it makes you more hungry....or at least something to that effect.

Do not run...running is terrible for you...even more so if you're 300 pounds.

Here is the trick...you can be 300 pounds and be healthy. Try eating whole grains, do NOT cut your calories to 1600-1900/ day, stick with 2200...cutting calories only hurts your metabolism. Eat fruits, veggies...lay OFF of ANY Corn Starch, stick with whole grains (brown rice, wheat pasta, etc.).

As for the exercise? just keep up the walking...and if you have it available, try swimming. It's probably one of the best things you can do... low impact to your joints, excellent for cardio, and tones your body like a mother.

If you eat that everyday, you cannot weigh 300+ pounds. It simply isn't possible.

I am not trying to sound like a prick, but you really need to write down EVERYTHING you eat and/or drink.

If you eat that everyday, you should be dropping fat pounds at the rate of about 2lbs a week.

that's what i'm thinking too.
