My weekend with Motor Storm.....

(Note: The following was written and posted in another forum yesterday.)

Well, let me just lay down the ground work here. I DL the demo of Motor Storm the day I got my PS3 (about 3 months ago). It sat there on it's HDD until the game arrived on my doorstep for review on Friday. So, in short -I loved the demo and played the crap out of it. This is where I'm coming from.

So, I don't want to steal some of the thunder from the show (where I'm going to have a more in depth impression later this week), I'll kinda keep this sorta brief.

The game has a really solid, polished feel, through and through. From the opening scene to the streaking of gleaming tire tracks left in the fresh mud, to the dirt splashing in your face -it's evedent that Evolution put alot of time into making sure this game was a refined dirty experience. This is not to say that the game doesnt have it's hitches -they are there. But, over all the game is great. It's that simple. I played the game over the weekend (didnt beat it yet, so please keep this in mind), but I did get into the 3rd level of tickets.

It does seem a little simple going through tickets levels 1-2, but 3 it steps up a little more and it's a little more challenging. But, it's still a little simple IMO. The first two times I played the game, I hit 7th and 9th place basically because I was unfamiliar with the tracks. But, once riden a few times, it was first place -almost with ease.

The tracks are a refreshing design. Though few (7 I think?), are of solid and confident build. There are numerous ways to attack a track depending on your vehicle or, the preffered way. But you really can take any way you like. For instance, you're really not suppose to take a motorcycle through the muddy parts, but some times it just happens (oops, slipped off that edge!) and you're just left to deal with it. But when that happens, it's not a show stopper. Yes, you'll need more juice (IE:Burst!), to get the speed increase, but it's not over. You still have a chance.

This is one of the great things I love about the game. It just so versatile. It leaves the complicated stuff to other racers. I know I'm not really enlightening anyone who's played the demo here, but I just want to assure everyone that, so far, my experience is that the full retail does indeed build upon the demo ALOT.

The graphics (running at 720P) are smooth, bright, and just stunning. They've seemed to really have figured a way to optimize the frame rate. It's buttery smooth, except for one or twice where I basically causes a 12 car pile-up with my truck and you could deffinitly tell the PS3 was choking. 😛

I'm more of a Motor Storm/Burnout guy, than a Gran Turismo/Formula 1 guy -so keep this in mind.

Oh, one more thing. The game keeps asking me what language I want to play the game in on start-up. Every single time. What?

Why is the game still SO much louder than anything else when highlighted in the Media Bar. :-/

Also, the load times outside of the game can be a little tedeous. Once inside the game, everything is great. For example, if you need to restart the game, hitting "restart" gets you back to the starting line in 1-2 seconds. No loading. This is the way it should be -but once you choose your car in the menu.....zzZZZZZZZ.

Just thought I would share my thoughts so far on the game. It's fun!

If anyone has any quesitons, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them.

**UPDATE 03/06/07**

I thought I would throw in one more update since today is release day.

I put several hours more into the game (maybe 3-4 hours) and by the middle-to-end of the 2nd ticket batch the difficulty really picks up. I love it when I'm driving and one of the big rigs is trying desperatly to slam my into the side of a cliff. I get such a kick out of it, because it doesnt feel cheap or forced in this game. It's should be expected here. It just actually feels totally appropriate and it just makes me laugh. Hrmp, maybe that was the Vodka though.

I'm finding that the more I get into the game, I missing more game mode options. I'd like it if there was a "quick play" options where I could select any track, condition (night, day, rain), and vehicle (that I've unlocked). Or what about an option to play heads-up against someone on the couch?

If I recall correctly, Phil Harrison recently stated that there would be updates and additions released for this game and R:FoM and I'm hoping that one of those updates will include more game modes for MS. If I had to put money on it, I would bet it would.

good job, you touched on all the good and bad things that places like IGN and 1UP said.

and yea I expect an update that includes split-screen multiplayer. its an idea that seems to be believable because, well.. look to the Japanese game for this.... there was no online multiplayer either. im assuming they are launching an online patch for the japanese that will include said online mode.
with that, it should be possible.
definitely looking forward to track packs, however. with 7-10 tracks, I fear I will grow tired of them all after awhile. but yea, a quickrace mode is the other big thing necessary, as well... not being able to jump in with the settings you want, on single player, is a bummer..
with the online mode, can you create a hosted game with the settings you want, such as pack size, track and environment settings (rain, day, night)? if so, at least that could be one way to achieve a quick race, as its quite likely any created server will fill up somewhat fast. a majority of PS3 owners will be picking this game up me thinks.

I havent been able to play with the on-line stuff much, mainly because the game comes out today so the servers were a little dry.

Yea, the tracks a few, but because they're so varied and have so many paths, there is alot of playability there. The thought of driving a truck was probably the least appealing thing to me in the game. But, when one of the races forced me to actually do so -it turned out to be a blast. The semis just plow through the mud like it's nothing. 🙂

Dammit... I'm on the fence about this one. With GRAW2 out today also and God of War 2 out next week my gaming dollars and time are getting stretched thin. I'm like you, Warcrow... I really don't care much about the Forzas and GTs of the world. I'll play them for a little while and then be bored out of mind. I like arcade racers and/or anything with guns (think Wipeout, Burnout, etc...). Hell, I even enjoy Full Auto 2 even though the reviews are overly harsh on the 'light' physics (BS complaint, BTW).

Anyway, I really want Motorstorm, but I think I'm going to have to push that purchase off a month or so. I want to play GRAW2 and GoW2 first.

The demo at Gamestop was running REALLY slow. I mean it looked like the cars were doing only 40mph. There was ZERO sense of speed. I hope they fixed that, unless it was just a unit-specific thing at the one I was playing with. The game looks great though. I find the lack of 2-player mode completely unacceptable though.

Hrm, I've not played a demo anywhere else except for my own home, so I cannot tell you if we were playing different versions.

However, I can tell you my expereince with the retail version is that there is a sense of speed. Remember, you're racing in dirt and mud, so it's not burnout.

The display demo for motorstorm in stores was an old demo. The demo released online via PSN was much better. Hopefully my local gamestop gets their shipment in today in time for me to pick it up.

i might get a ps3 this weekend. this would be the first game i pick up.

That rather than Resistance? 😀

i'll play the demo of that first. i'm still skeptical about playing a shooter with a controller.

Prudent man. I tried Resistance demo and I wasn't digging playing FPS with a controller. I am sure it's a good game, but it's not my cup of tea. I do enjoy FPS on PC however.

Still waiting for Gamestop to call... Not that I could play now though seeing as I am at work.

You're in for a treat. I'm waiting to really test the MP and the lag issues (if there are any).

Finally got to play... No lag noticeable thus far online, but I sure do suck. I have finished in the bottom half in every race. Great game though.

One thing negative is that this game sorely needs a buddy list of some kind.
