I bought HL2 and completed it, but I never really got into it. I just felt that, well, I paid $55 for the much anticipated Half Life 2, so I guess I better finish it, although I never really felt compelled to.

I liked Farcry alot and I still go back and play thru some of the levels every now and then. I thought Doom3 was great...at first...then after about 2 hours I started to get bored. When I last played it I was somewhere in Hell, but I'm not too bothered about finishing it.

I liked Riddick a lot too - there's a good mix of stealth and run-n-gun and I like the dark atmosphere and the fist fighting - shame there's no multiplayer for it though. And Riddick didn't sell for $50+ either - only $30 at most places, although I got mine at gogamer.com for $15 :)

I don't know if it's just me on this, but I just remembered how HL2, for me at least, had blurry textures on surfaces from short distances away. I guess it has a really short draw-in distance on some objects. I play the game at 16x12 Max Quality with 4xAF, so I don't think it's my settings.

D3 textures are even worse...IMHO

no D3's textures are much better for sure. Some of the spots in HL2 was really ugly low res. I hate Doom3 as a game and LOVE HL2 but texture wise D3 beats it.

But I think I speak for all when I say that while Doom 3 isn't something I want to play, I'm very excited to play games based on the Doom3 engine

Must be lucky then since i never had any issues..actually steam was extremely un-intrusive and merely is a small app in the background for launching the game(s) itself.
No game is worth the ball-n-chain that Steam is.

Yeah I finally uninstalled it and will probably toss the game. Actually, I'll hold onto it. Valve won't last, and Steam has to go down sometime.

UT series stays alive becuase of the sheer amount of support and modifications you can get, sure theres some complete crap stuff out there, but alot of it is very good, and it always keeps me coming back for more.

finally someone who doesnt diss rtcw

Far Cry was possibly the best $30 I've ever spent. I've played through it a few times now & still fire it up on occasion. It's challenging, the AI is excellent and there are multiple ways to do just about everything. I finished Doom3 and haven't played since, and I completely lost interest in HL2 about a few play-hours into it - a little bit after you get the machine gun. IMO FC's graphics were the best. While character models certainly weren't as good as HL2's, that wasn't their focus; the engine was built to render large outdoor zones beautifully and with a huge draw distance, which worked out great. I'd rather have a beautiful game environment while playing than more detailed character models during cutscenes. Last I saw of ut2k4 was when uninstalling the demo in disgust

I completely agree. I find it rather odd that I finished Doom 3 and not HL2. HL2 wasn't any more boring, I don't think. I would guess it's because Doom 3 was simple. Kill all zombies and find the boss demon, that's old school. HL2 was vague and desperate in it's story, I had no focus at all.

Farcry is pretty simple too, and I like it. HL2 definitely had better graphics, but Farcry had better gameplay and a better environment for me. All the makeup in the world can't cover an ugly face, know what I mean?

The problem is that if Steam goes down so does HL2. "Offline" mode is a total joke.

I agree with most people here: FC>HL2>D3 but these are all single player games (althouh FC has decent multiplayer). UT2K4 is DA BOMB for multiplayer (single player is for practicing and getting familiar with the maps for mulitplayer). To the people that gave up on HL2 - it does get better with constant variety and new environments, ending with the most spactacular tower level (graphics and presentation wise - gameplay is still simplistic). Definetely worth finishing.

That's not true. There are cracks for steam that allow you to play without it. Steam is entirely unnecessary and is bloatware, it would be incredibly easy to patch HL2 so it wouldn't need it anymore. It adds nothing.

Along with viruses and CD key stealers.

It would but Valve aren't going to do this anytime soon.

And I won't be reinstalling the game anytime soon either.
