My view of Napster 2.0 so far ..

I'm a student at Penn State and I just moved back in today and wanted to give our new Napster 2.0 a try .. now .. this post is just regarding the service ITSELF, not all the asinine politicing that has gone on to develop it. It's unbelievable, in my dorm I RARELY get any speeds lower than 500kbps and I've had very little trouble finding the songs I wanted to DL. Some may argue that with DRM the downloaded songs are only playable in Windows Media Player and the Napster client, and while this is primarily true we all know there are ways to bypass that, however cumbersome they may be. Yes, this system so far has drawbacks, it is not YET available to off campus students, but I do believe it is being developed for off campus students and will arrive shortly.. although how hard is it to grab a friend's laptop, show up on campus and grab one of hundred public LAN connections to DL a few gigs and return home.. Bottom line for me is that the speeds are amazing, the selection well satisfying, overall I'm extremely pleased. And I loathed the concept from the start, but I'm being swayed. The ONLY thing that really irks me is that with DRM it's a Windows ONLY deal .. Linux is my primary desktop OS and therefore I'm not too thrilled about this.. but booting into Windows and using it as a jukebox is acceptable for the time being ..

so wait, what's the deal again? Penn state paid napster X amount of money so student will have unlimited access to songs?
You guys better pray that the new HP iPod (hPod???) supports WMA.

Yeah, Penn State paid whatever to Napster and now we get this service for 'free.' Although they say the service is now simply included with our technology fee. The fee we pay for computer access in the labs, etc. This fee has not increased, they say it merely now COVERS Napster 2.0 as well.

I found the quality of songs on Napster to be below that of iTunes and generally unacceptable for headphone listening. But I'll be going to Penn State next year, and hey if its free...

Apple has licensed the iPod to HP
