My videocard is crapping out, looking for a new one

Hi all,

I currently have a Sapphire 4870 512MB Radeon video card and I've had it for a little over a year and it's now starting to show artifacts randomly in different games. I'm currently looking for a new video card to replace it while shopping on a budget.

My question is, would a 5770 1GB Radeon card be an okay replacement for my 4870 512MB card? I'm gaming on a 24 in LCD at 1920x1080 resolution and I'm looking for the best possible performance. Thanks!

Well looking at newegg I see this on the sapphire 4850 they have in stock.


Manufacturer Limited Warranty period (parts): 720 days
Manufacturer Limited Warranty period (labor): 720 days

So if you have had it only a year you should be able to get a replacement card.

The moral of the story is...if you just want suggestions, don't get too specific with your story as to why you're in the market for a new card. A 1GB 5770 would be a wee bit better than a 512MB HD 4870. Not a huge leap, but better.

4870 owner (in my 2nd machine) its powered by a 8400 at 4.2 and 4 gigs of ram. Copared to a I7 at 3.6 and 6gigs and a 5870... at 1920X1280 sad as it sounds 90% of my games play as well on either.. no real noticable difference. Now if i bench um.. oh ya, it shows. But in real game performance, as in "just playing the game" i dont see to much difference.

hate to say it (i been thinking of upgrading my old 4870 too) but RMA is the way to go IMHO. Prices will drop ont he 58XX and 57XX stuff when Team green drops the huge turd its going to drop (opinion only, from the pre benchs i have seen). Pick up a new card in 6 months and you will get a better deal and you wont notice the wait if you RAM the current one.
