My V5 5500 experience with W2K and W98SE w/ Many Results

I had the CL Annihilator 2 GTS for a month now and I was extremely impressed with it's W98SE performance (http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=195515). Win2k was so-so..

I was bored so I thought I should get a V5 5500 AGP and do some benches and compare it to the CL GTS. Well, here are the results:

If you check my other thread, you'll see that for Win2K, the V5 is not a bad choice since W2k gaming performance is still sub-par IMHO. However, if you're on W98, get the GTS, you'll be much happier!

Image Quality:

Image quality is comparable to the GTS, otho FSAA does make a difference in games..However, it's not a solution for me bc it's too slow to be considered a good solution...

If the next gen 3dfx card can do Q3A @ 1600X1200X32 4X FSAA @ 60FPS, I'll buy in an heart beat 😀

My final thoughts...

I initially thought I would get a huge performance increase with the V5 in UT, but I was extremely disappointed with it as you can see from the FPS benches...

System Specs:

W2K:
Pentium III 700@868
Tyan Trinity 400 (VIA 4.23 4 in 1 drivers)
256MB Apacer PC133 Infineon
Adaptec 29160
Atlas 10K 18GB
SB Live Platinum w/live drive
3Com 3c905B
H+
Adaptec 2930c
Plextor 8/20 CDR
CL 5x DVD

W98SE:
Pentium III 650@936
Asus P3V4X (VIA 4.23 4 in 1 drivers)
128MB Generic PC133
WD 7200 15GB
SB AWE64GOLD
3COM 3C905B
H+
Hitachi 4X DVD

one last interesting thought...

I thought Q3A performance in W2k is better...not in my case...I guess that's for Nvidia cards...

Thanks for the detailed benches, but ...So much underlined text! :Q

Its kinda hard to read. 😛

[Edit] Oops you must have edited it while I was typing. [/Edit]

Your UT scores and Q3 scores are from the V5, right? Both Win2k and 98se. I had similiar performance when i had a v5 in win2k...

Here's my comparison with a gts between win ME and win2k.. I've gotten fairly comparable games scores(yes, the 3dmarks are lower in 2k, but the games are what really counts). MY UT and Q3A(can't bench HL yet... 🙁) are about the same at 640x480, but win2k tends to be faster at 1024x768 by a little bit.

Mike,

yeah, I saw your thead but I still thinkW98 is the one I'll use if all I do is play games though...

BTW, nice oc on that PIII! which slocket and what voltage did you use??? oem or retail? what kind of cooling??? what kind of RAM?

Thanks.

98Se is still a good gaming OS, and win2k nVidia drivers do lack some things that the win98 drivers have. But I did that thread for those who were saying that win2k completely sucks @ss for games 😉.

As far as my o/c, its a 650cb0 OEM, on an Abit Slotket, with a PEP66. Running at 1.75 volts. Ram is Crucial CAS2.

Mike

I actually like hte gorbs a lot... i don't think you'll be able to o/c any higher with a PEP66.... I'm just a freak that likes the biggest heatsink possible on my chip....
