"With the exception of the African American and Indian populations, the United States during its first 50 years of existence was mainly a homogeneous, white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant (WASP) society."

I think that's kind of funny. I thought it was just a slang term.

My Government teacher used the term on a test.

People kept asking him "What the heck is WASP?"

Without Papers.

WASP is a pretty accepted term in history circles. It doesn't mean anything derogatory, it just is an acronym used to describe a large portion of the American population. Many of my teachers have used it.

Without Papers.

I thought that was interesting...a lot of racial terms came from Ellis Island

From the word "guappo"? I dunno, ask Google. Conflicting reports.

its without papers...if someone came to Ellis Island without papers they had WOP chalked onto them. A whole boatload of Italians came over one time, and none of them had papers, and the name stuck.

or something to that affect

Well, I was just going by Google. I searched and pages like this came up. They all mention the "WithOut Papers" thing, but point to the foreign origin, though it seems like different people trace the word of origin differently.
