I few years ago I built this computer:
not sure of mobo right now
amd athlon 64 3200+ 754
2gb corsair xms pc3200
ati x700

My mobo doesnt have a pci express slot, and its socket 754
I remember when I had built it, it was when amd released the socket 754 and someone on here told me it was the future, but then they release the 939 a month later..but anyways.
This system has ran every game fine up until 2007 and now I know I have to upgrade if I want to run vista and dx10.

But my question is, should I wait? Intel released their quad cores but the dual cores are performing better and nvidia 8000 series is getting a little old. I understand no matter when I build a system that it will be outdated in a day but I want to know if an 8 core processor is soon to be released and when the 9000 series graphics cards are to be released. The only thing that peaks my interest right now is the gigabyte board with quad sli. But I figure if I wait until the 9000 series comes out I can get 4 of the top videocards and I should be set for another 4 years. And yeah its gonna be wierd to say this, but I feel that with all the video game companies making their games also for dx9 that microsoft will release another os that doesn't force people to upgrade their systems just so it can boot up ;).

Looking at whats coming in january and feb right now would be a good time to wait, the new 780 chipset is going to get released, penryn is going to get change things up, ddr3 will hit the mainstream, and the new graphics cards will be available and not being sold at 30 percent over MSRP. AMD will be doing a phenom price drop and Intel will ineviably drop their prices as well.
