We are part of the European Union and technically European, although as several other posters have stated, if you asked me I would say that I am English or British, but never a European.

It's pretty arbitrary anyway. Europe and Asia are considered to be different continents, even though they're quite thoroughly connected by land. Someone of course mentioned Japan. And then there's Greenland, considered part of North America, even though it's got quite a lot of water between it and the main part of the continent.

The fact that the naming of continents happened long before the invention of land-imaging satellites probably played some tiny part in the craziness of the naming schemes.

He very explicitly stated that it was (geographically) not a part of the continent at all. If he had said not part of continental europe, I'd agree. If he had said not culturally part of europe, I'd agree. But that's not what he's arguing

And we all argue about inane shit all the time, it's just how our family works. One day he yelled at me for about 45 minutes because I had a different stance on gay marriage

Well It is part of the same tectonic plate as the mainland so geologically speaking they are the same. "(geographically) not a part of the continent at all" wrong! Geographically they are absolutey part of the same. Geography is not a defining physical characteristic. They are a part of the same geographical region. Geopolitically, historically, culturally, geologically and according to every continental criteria model in existence they are a part of the same. Your uncle is just an uneducated dipshit with self esteem issues that feels the need to argue every point so he can feel better about himself. Just like my Brother-in-law.
