I am purchasing a new TV.

My TV

The salesman told me that I can't play video games on it cuz it's a projection. Is this an old myth? I thought that was only for an old 2-D games. Love my PS2!!! Can someone tell me if the hold "video games will burn into the screen" thing is true?

Thanks

Don't listen the salesperson. However, I'm wondering why you didn't pick out a DLP set instead. Sure, it would have cost more money, but the picture quality would have been excellent.

I looked at all the options: DLP, LCD, and plasma. I cant justify spending the amount of ching on a DLP. And the fact that I am getting the floor model for <1000 makes this TV a good deal.

You can play video games on that, but you need to be very careful to prevent burn-in issues.

When you play, keep the "contrast" (white level) turned down between 30 and 40. It's the same for watching 4:3 content without stretching it.

Burn in is a serious issue for people who turn thier "contrast" up high, and then allow stationary graphics to sit on the screen or watch media with black bars a lot. But if you keep your contrast low enough, the issue all but goes away. Video games are especially dangerous because of score bars and stationary graphics.

I have much the same TV (just bigger) and I watch 4:3 content on it all the time with no burn-in issues. But I keep my contrast below 40 all the time. This means I have to pull the blinds during the day, though.

Uh, unless it is LCD or DLP you are still going to have to worry about burn-in....why is everyone saying no??? If it is CRT based then you should worry. More so for the black vertical bars when watching 4:3 material for hours on end. You'll get black ghosting after a while.

The biggest problem is something constant in the same place. Like health bar. Or CNN logo. Or something that just sticks in the same spot for hours on end ...

On a semi-related note, I am unable to use the lightgun I bought for my PS2 with my RPTV. I guess Resident Evil: Dead Aim will have to wait until I have another TV.

Of course you can play video games on it.

Even though Plasma's burn in much faster than Projection (unless they fixed that...)

Last I saw, plasma tv's burned in within 30 minutes.

My point was... he wants him to spend more money. I think. I'm not arguing burn-in whatsoever. I know plasmas burn in quickly.

In fact, if it's a comission store, I'd go back and buy it form someone else because you don't like dealing with someone who's either 1) A Liar, or 20 A complete idiot.

Or better yet, buy it from a totally different store.

If a person is smart and keeps the contrast low, burn in is all but a non-issue.

I watch 4:3 content in it's OAR all the time on CRT RPTVs and have no problems.

But then, my contrast never goes above 40 (on a 0-100 scale).

Don't buy DLP based on picture quality. Depends too much on the model/manufacturer. Many sites even claim that CRT is the champion of picture quality. CRT has many disadvantages, such as brightness, viewing angles, and maintenance. Picture quality is not the thing to look at.

I've been playing games on my projection for months now. Absolutely no problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

You are a unique butterfly. Most unknowing consumers jack the contrast up along with brightness.... "it looks better" but in reality it is far off from accurate...burn those tubes!

No idea why people are calling him an idiot, he is right that they can burn in a screen if your not careful. It doesnt mean you cant play them, just be careful not to play for 8 hours at a time where you have a still image like a score on there the whole time.
