My TV looks like crap at 1920 x 1080

I bought my gf a new TV to use as a monitor. We've connected it to her computer, which has a 512MB radeon 4870. When we try to change her desktop to be 1920 x 1080, it looks like crap. The next lower resolution looks fine, 1600 x 1050 I think, but obviously, we want to run it at the higher resolution.

We've tried using both an HDMI cable with a DVI converter, and also a VGA cable with a DVI converter. The TV has no DVI input.

Any idea on what's wrong or how to fix this? :*(

Is it possibly overscanned and not mapping 1-1? Make sure you have the latest drivers and try looking in the settings for overscan settings.

Also, try setting the DPI to 120 or higher. This can make a world of difference in being able to read text on a large display at a high resolution. Right click on the desktop, select properties - settings - advanced.

use the DVI->HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable. In CCC, Displays Manager, you can click "Force-->HDTV Mode-->1920x1080 60Hz"

Yup, this monitor is much easier to get working correctly with ATI graphics cards since there is an option to force the resolution. I had problems with the TV for a day before I figured it out.

Make sure your tv is set to 1:1 (no zoom, no stretch, no nonsense)

And then make sure you are set to 1920x1080.. if your video card can detect whether it is a TV make sure it detects the resolution and output method properly (this happens to me in nVidia)

Finally it may be overscanning and for that you will have to fit it such that it will become 1:1 (this loses some pixels).

I don't know if there are drivers available for a TV, are there?

I installed the regular ATI drivers for her only, not the entire Catalyst package :X

Could you kindly guide me, I'm clueless :X

You need the entire CCC installed. It took me 6 hrs to get my display working. It involved uninstalling the old catalyst drivers, and installing the new ones. I then changed to 16bit color and went into DTV (DVI) 4 and clicked HDTV Support. I then checkboxed Add 1080p60 format to the display manager. I then forced 1920x1080 HDTV 60hz mode. Then I brought the color to 32-bit.
