My rant isn't about customers, it's about dumbass techs who argue with me. I sit on a mentor line for several hours out of my day. We only take calls from techs who are having trouble on their calls. When on this line, we are a resource. We are not telling the techs what to do, we're giving a possible solutions. Thus there's also the possibility that we WON'T know the answer! It happens!
Case 1:
Me: Mentor line, Gregg.
Tech: How do you uninstall commander in Windows 2000?
Me: No clue, doesn't 2K have add/remove programs?
Tech: No, the customer doesn't have it.
Me: We don't know then. Windows 2000 is supported on a "best attempt" basis.
Tech: Find out, that's why I'm calling.
Me: $#*&# you, assh0le!
Case 2:
Me: Mentor line, Gregg.
Tech: I have a customer with a 675. His computer isn't pulling an IP address, but I can ping the router.
Me: That's impossible. Your NIC has to have an IP address for your computer to ping the router.
Tech: winipcfg doesn't show an IP address, it doesn't have one.
Me: It has to have one, otherwise you wouldn't have been able to ping.
Tech: You're telling me it can't happen, I'm telling you it DID.
Me: Maybe you're looking at the PPP adapter, but I can guarantee you if you were able to ping the 675 you DO have an IP address on the NIC.
Tech: PPP adapter?
Me: Sigh...
