Was coming back from a work function not even 2hrs ago... had 2 coworkers with me that don't have cars (they moved here from another country not long ago) and we were almost all the way back.

I stopped at a red light and not even a second later I got NAILED from behind, the guy clearly didn't apply any breaks. My back window shattered and my whole tailgate is jacked (2003 Expedition). The guy that nailed me took off down a side street which was actually a one way to come back out... but at the end of the street is a walkway over the freeway.

This guy drove on the pedestrian walkway to get away, it went over a freeway that was right there! I got hit so hard and everything happened so fast that the only reason I know this is that another guy behind me pulled up and made sure we were all OK and told me that is what the guy did. Naturally we don't have a license plate of the other car or anything.

A few mins later police drive by... I wave them down. They do a search around the area and of course come up empty. My vehicle wont start so I google emergency cutoff for my car and sure enough, I locate the button and voila, I'm on my way.

The kicker is I dropped full coverage about 6-8mo ago because the vehicle is only worth $5-$6k and I drive it <5000mi / yr. Just going to suck it up and be glad no one was seriously hurt. I can replace a car, can't replace a limb or a life!!

Anyway, glad to be here to post... all of us were wearing our seat belts and I'm sure that played a major factor when we got rear ended at about 40mph.

Glad you all are ok! Any traffic cameras at that intersection?

I don't even know. It pretty much all residential with an abandoned building (we were leaving Detroit...). Hell I'm glad we got hit where we did, it could have been a much worse area although it doesn't sound like it. Looking around I didn't notice anything and when I thought about it, the guy probably doesn't have money anyway. He will get his, I bet his car fared worse than mine since it was his front end.

Glad you're okay.

A couple years ago when I had my Maxima I called my insurance company about dropping the full coverage but it would have only saved me about $60/year so I kept it. Never needed it but it is cheap peace of mind. The car was worth a few grand so I figure it was worth keeping it insured.

My savings was almost $300/yr so I said hell yes. Now, it's a big fat cost haha, but hey live and learn.

In an accident, most newer cars have a fuel emergency cut off... it stops the flow of fuel in case of fire. If you hit the button it will resume back to normal operation.

it's only fords and its an intertia cutoff switch turns off fuel in case of an accident so fuel won't pump out.

Oh, thought it was all vehicles. I guess thinking back I've only seen it on Ford cars because I guess that's what people I know get in an accident in

Well, make sure to file a full police report - hit and run is a criminal offense, after all - and see if they can put a call for witnesses in the news.
The car should have pretty obvious signs of the accident, and if whoever did it, is still driving around with it, it should be noticeable, that he was recently involved in a frontal crash. Maybe you can get your insurance behind it as well.

Yeah I called my insurance anyway (minutes after it happened), they offered me towing (which is all they're obligated to do). The police just asked if anyone was hurt and then drove off after they looked for the other vehicle. Unfortunately I've been in one other accident before in Detroit and when I called they said if no one is injured they're not coming. They don't do all that fussy stuff paperwork.

Even the witnesses that saw it happened just drove off... it's the way Detroit is unfortunately. At the end of the day, I just don't know if it's worth the hassle. I'm fortunate enough to be in a situation where I can cover the cost of the vehicle in under a month's time so I really just want to move on. I am really just glad it wasn't worse and I hope my passengers still feel OK tomorrow.

Even if they were to find the perp it's going to come down to him having no insurance. Everyone is legally required to have auto insurance in Michigan but some folks living in the Detroit area do not have it due to religious reasons. Pursuing this will be a huge waste of time. Detroit is about two steps away from the world of Mad Max.

I got rear ended once and the license plate was stamped into my bumper (that sounds really dirty). Worth having a look anyway.

Hit-and-run would still get them locked up.
But yeah, missed that Detroit was being involved.

I've had this happen (no kidding) 3 times in my life. Sitting at a light/sign and rear ended by people that weren't coasting. I think one was clocked at 45mph.

Let's just say you you should probably take tomorrow off. You will more than likely be really sore.

Glad you are OK.

Even if you don't file a claim, sadly your Insurance Company will jack your rate and an accident is now on your record forever even if you change Insurance Companies.

I was thinking that might be the case. I can make the call in the morning.

Ya my girl was involved in a hit and run inside Walmart parking lot. She heard about the new rule where cops don't come out for accidents and even though I explained to her a hit and run is different, she neglected to make the call until she got home. Needless to say it's been many months and no word from the police surprise surprise. Thankfully it was a low speed accident but tell that to the driver's side of my car.

You are a better man than I. I would have immediately jumped to the conclusion she wrecked my car. And that is why she failed to report it promptly. :ninja: Why did no one attempt to get the Walmart security vid since a crime occurred?

OP: Glad it turned out ok and no one was seriously injured.

Had the exact same thing happen to me. Except we got out of our vehicles and I threw the guy to the ground after he accused me of being in the fault *wtf!*

I end up going to road rage school. Gotta love the justice system.

What's the address of the intersection? I want to see the scene of the crime.

My wife and I have both been hit from behind while stopped at red lights.
