It is/was my primary Inet surfing machine, getting a little old, and the underlying Windows 98 had gotten frayed. I cleaned off the OS's and reinstalled, starting from Win98se. It was doing pretty well at first, and other than this odd last-minute change, still is running well. But I'm not going to add the second of the dual-boot layers until I fix this.
It seems to be shutting down normally at first, and watching the power LED's, I think it cuts the psu off for a split second. But it's only that, a tenth of a second at most, and it's booting back up again. I can push the power button for four seconds, of course, and kill it off before it gets too far, but that isn't always convenient.
If this same thing affects W2K or other users of W98, I didn't find any thread that was about the exact same situation.
