My turn for a "I'm upgrading my computer" thread

I'm upgrading my computer and here's what I am thinking to get so far. I already have a sound card, video card, monitor, keyboard, speakers and optical drives that I will use in this computer so I don't need suggestions on those. I'll use the computer mostly for music, websurfing, and some gaming. My budget is $450-$500 SHIPPED.

2500 XP Barton retail $80
Shuttle AN35 mobo $58
512mb Kingston pc-3200 $80
Antec case with 350w PS $75
Logitech mx300 mouse $19
Seagate 120gb 8m cache IDE $92
Sony 1.44mb Floppy $12

$416 + shipping

What do you guys think?

drop that cpu to a mobile 2400.

get mushkin 3200 instead.

save a few bucks, and get a better OC while your at it 😉

**EDIT**

your not OCing? you realize how easy it is right? just change the FSB to 200 and your set. a monkey can do it.

I wont be able to use the retail HS/Fan then right? It'd get too hot.

Hmmm maybe I should overclock. Ideas on what CPU if I were going to overclock?

like i said, the mobile 2400.

why don't you better pick a pair of 256Mb modules, so you can have Dual channel and gain extra performance.

as regards the rest, it seems pretty fine.

yeah, like .01% performance. just stick to the 1 512. its cheaper.

I have a similar question but it applies to pizzadude as well...Which one of these mobo's would be best for a mobile chip for OCing?

I heard a lot of good things about NF7 but also a lot of bad things about how you can't jump the fps higher than 210....

Which one of these allows me to get the highest fsb and multiplier without any modding to the mobo?

ABIT AN7 (nForce2 Ultra 400)
DFI nForce2 Ultra 400 NFII Ultra Infinity
Abit NF7-S Rev.2
shuttle AN35N-Ultra

Um, how would you save a few bux going for a mobile? You'll need a hs/f then...

Anyways, the original parts look good, I wouldn't change anything on there except if you can find cheaper PC3200 ram iguess.

Any helpful advice?

That actually looks just about exactly like what I'd do in your position. The only thing I would say is you might as well get a 160GB drive because they're about $10 more than the 120GB versions. The Hitach 160GB 8MB PATA drive is an amazing deal for $92, and has a 3-year warranty.

I've always thought drives with an odd number of heads were a little funny, like all those 120GB drives that only use one side of the second platter.

thanks for the suggestion.

for the CPU, should I get a mobile 2400+ and overclock it or just stick with the 2500+ barton?

i want to use the speeze falconrock heatsink cause its so quiet. would that be sufficient for the mobile OCed to a 3200+?

I'm thinking of building pretty much the same thing, the only differences are:
Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 8T - OEM $78
SAMSUNG 160GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model SP1604N, OEM $92

Anyone know if that is a decent HD?

How hot is the room your computer's gonna be in? how good is the air flow in your case? what type of grapics card will you be using?

I personally would go for an aero 7 lite retail (love those blowers, they look so gud), but so long as you overclock in steps, and watch you temp's, you should be fine

From everything I've seen, the 35W Mobile 2200's overclock just as well as the 35W Mobile 2400's, but I guess it's only $10 difference.

The Speeze FalconRock is pretty good, but I'd go for something a little nicer if I was going to overclock... Maybe you don't want to spend $40 for a Zalman 7000 AlCu, but I'd get something a little nicer.
