When I was in South Korea I had plenty of Koreans who towered over me. I'm 5'10" as well. When I was first going to Korea I expected everyone to be small. Now, when I was in Thailand I did notice that most of the guys there are small.

My grandfathers generation (him and his friends) when South Korea was dirt poor, they're all around 5'6". My fathers generation (him and his friends) when South Korea was growing economically, they're all around 5'9". My generation (me and my friends) we're all 5'10" and taller.

I'd like to live out here for a year or 2. btw OP where do you live?

If you're in NYC and have a hankering for real ramen, there's an Ippudo there that has really good Hakata style ramen. you may have seen them around when you were in Tokyo. you'll just have to pay around 50 bucks for lunch, instead of 1000 yen, lol.

I live out of Texas. Most I can find is some decent sushi rolls locally. Which I found that the Japanese aren't all that into.

Success! You actually went to Nara and hung out with the deer. I'm not sure if you were planning on doing that anyway, but since I brought it up in the other thread I'm claiming it.

And I feel the same about the temples. Once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all. And most of them have been struck by lightning and restored, so most of them aren't that old... just using old techniques

Agreed on the temples. There were a shitload of the ones we went to where the information on it ends in "Rebuilt in 195x".

I believe Nara was already on the list, but you can give credit anyways :p I don't believe we knew about the deer until you posted.

Did you buy any used panties out of vending machines? It's not a trip to Japan until you buy used panties out of vending machines. :colbert:

My daughter is getting stationed at Yokosuka naval base and should be there on the uss ronald Regan in a few months. She is super excited.

You better buy her a Dreamcast and a copy of Shenmue. :colbert:

We've been talking about going for 10-14 days. Only thing I really don't like about going is the plane ride... it's about 13-14hrs to get there... sitting in one spot / confined to one area... for like... ever.

ippudo in ny - 2-3 hour wait and that 50 bucks price tag
ippudo in hk - no wait, no line and dirt cheap..

Thumbs up for Ippudo and not recommending other crappy places like Momofuku.

Ippudo is delish. $50 bucks? Their ramen is only $15-20. Add pork bun appetizer + beer = still $35~40 at most.

I was the one who first recommend okonomiyaki. What did you think? Orgasmic right?! Did you put mayo on it and look like a retard eating it with chopsticks like me? :p

Been there, done that already. I've done Russia (Moscow), Islands near Australia, and now Japan, probably the 3 furthest you can go. Brazil wasn't much better @ 9 hours either.

I need to do some closer shit like Mexico, Caribbean, or even more Europe trips, ugh.

Also, I just want to say that apparently NO ONE in Japan wears sandals. I found that out the first day just looking at the Japanese people and their feet. Very few would wear sandals, and if they did it was with socks or something. I stuck out like a sore thumb, but I didn't give a shit. 25,000 steps every day and you think I want to sweat in shoes? That's just asking for blister-o-rama.

I thought it was pretty good. The wifey didn't really like them. I got it twice just to see if the flavor changed much from place to place, but it was rather consistent. It took me a bit to realize I was eating cabbage... I kept telling myself I'm being healthy!

Mayo came with it by default. I didn't have too much of a problem eating it with chopsticks. It took a little learning at first but I started to just grab what I could and shovel it in my mouth asap before I dropped it all.

The normal me would be full of hateful comments that would probably merit a month long ban but the new me is smarter and more intelligent and responds with:

"Your wife may be of the inferior intellect of the average homosapien and if that is perhaps true on a certain level then I therefore agree with the Japanese culture that you may not belong and therefore your opinion may not matter on the subject of which okonomiyaki is a delicious treat of the Japanese empire and therefore irrelevant to my considerations of what is actually 'good' as far as an entire culture is concerned.

I'm glad you liked it.

To your wife I say good day sir. :colbert:

when we went, nobody spoke a lick of English. We couldn't figure out that we had to swipe the card to get out of the train system and couldn't get help for the life of us... nobody could communicate and finally some police figured out what we were trying to get help with. I don't recall if it was Tokyo or Shinjuku, it was over a decade ago. Other than that, agreed with the rest of it about the people.

The communication thing really made us feel restricted in what we could do, but obviously this is not their fault.

Also, as I was walking alone back to the hotel, I was solicited on a typical street. At first I was flattered, then realized what was going on. :D

I should probably ask what sandals you wear if they were comfortable for that long. :p

-Living Standards. I see some of the clumped together housing nearly falling apart with tons of people living in tiny living spaces with clothes hanging out on wires. No dryers? Sorry, I guess I just had the wrong image of decent standards.

Keep in mind that Japan has less land mass than California (145,925 sq mi vs. 163,696 sq mi ) yet has a ton more people (126,880,000 vs. 38,802,500 -- 873.1/sq mi vs. 246/sq mi).

Consider yourself lucky if it's only that long. Nashville doesn't have a direct flight so we have to fly to somewhere else like Chicago or Dallas first and then enjoy a 12-14 hour flight from there. But the fun doesn't end there if flying to Narita and then heading to Tokyo or Yokohama. You still have another hour or two train ride ahead after landing that you may need to wait 30 minutes or so to even get on.

The rule of thumb I tell people who have to make a connection before heading to Tokyo is that you can basically set your watch to arriving in your hotel 24 hours after leaving your house. Long day. Especially in coach.

Nice pics op!

Reef Fanning. They have a bunch of different color choices. They are super comfy - at least for me.

Yeah I totally understand - still - it seems rather run down. You can have close housing without looking run-down. I've also heard it's more of an issue of populated cities and unpopulated cities.
