my trio of primes is complete *happy dance*

bought a 35L over lunch today to go with my 85 and 135. primes are so addicting and a killer to the wallet. i've been swapping my zooms to primes recently starting with the 70-200 into a 135, and a 24-70 into a 85. i'm only keeping the 17-40 around in case i need "really wide"...

can't wait for it to come in the mail, just have to gloat

congrats! i'm waiting/holding off on the 135 until i absolutely need it.

As for the 7D... honestly... I had it and I sold it. Crop bodies don't feel the same to me anymore. The 1D mark III though was nice.

the 35L is here! couple of sample shots, 1600iso at f/1.4

Very nice! I loved that lens when I used it for work. I'm pondering getting some new glass this winter as well. Not sure if I want to go wider (17-40) or longer (135).

Ok, would someone please explain what makes these primes so great?

In simple easy to understand terms 🙂

I got a 50 1.8 for my Nikon because it was fast and cheap.
Now tell me why I should add an 85 or a 135.

I'm no expert so I'll leave it to someone else to explain. You can look at sample pictures for those lenses at POTN though. I used to think the differences in these lenses were insignificant, until I looked at the sample pictures for the 50L.

However, I cannot afford any of them in the near future. I had almost decided to get a 50 1.4 until I noticed that I could get a 50 1.8 AND a 430 EXII for almost the same price.

Congratulations! You've got a really nice set of lenses there.

I am thinking the 35 1.4L and maybe the 85 1.8 will be my next lenses.

Can you comment on the 135/2 vs. the 85/1.8? On a crop?

Edit: I misread that. I didn't see that you have the 85L.

35mm f/1.4!!!
That's the lens I really wanted to get for years. I've just put 24-105mm f/4 and 50mm f/1.4 out for sale so I could get 35mm f/1.4.

On top of that, you also have 85mm f/1.2 and 135mm f/2.0. Damn, that's a sweet setup. How is it to have both of 85mm f/1.2 and 135mm f/2.0? I know both lenses have their own merits but most people seem to keep only one of those two.

How soon before we see a Canon DSLR with the sensor of the 5DMkII and the body of the 7D? This is what I am waiting for but I wonder if Canon will do it at the risk of hurting XD sales.

135 is longer... 😉 I am/was in the same boat. I want the 135L badly, but sticking my 50-135 at 135 I realized a) it would only serve as a headshot portrait lens for me probably. and b) I personally could use IS at that FL.

But on the other hand, I argue everyone should have the 85/1.8, it's so cheap relatively (or it was anyway, back in the sub $300 dell days) and such a damn bargain. The 100/2 falls in this too, underrated, but too long for me on crop.
