I've had a passenger door issue that I discovered shortly after purchase, but the dealer couldn't fix it and said the body shop had to. The passenger door clips something on the back of the front fender during opening, slicing the weather strip and knocking a tiny notch of paint off about the size of a ball point pen tip. After the first attempt to fix the issue, I waited a few months because I knew I would be out of a car for a week due to the repaint.
I took the car in Friday evening, assuming they would start the approval process with Chrysler on Saturday so that it would be at the body shop first thing Monday morning. Around 2:30 Monday, I decide to give them a call.
:sneaky: "We were just about to call you, the service manager says we can fix it here."
"You guys have already tried. I have rented a car for a week on the understanding that it would be going to the body shop for most of the week this week because when I had you try to fix it, that was what you told me"
:sneaky:"Well, the service manager says the body shop would have to order the paint and that wouldn't arrive for a week at minimum"
"Really. I had previously showed the vehicle to your body shop to find out how long they would need it for, and verified late last week that there were no impediments to doing the work this week"
:sneaky:"Well, they will have to sand down the entire door and repaint the whole thing"
"Yes, I know. That was what we agreed upon"
:sneaky:"We have a guy here who can do it with touch up paint, and it isn't even catching anymore"
"Really? It still was when I brought it in. You can see where I'd covered it with touch up paint myself, and it was knocked off"
:sneaky:"Well, that's because the paint was too high, so it's catching"
"No, there must be clearance for both the door and the weather strip. There is currently clearance for neither. You can obviously see that the weather strip must be replaced, as well as the mechanical issue, as well as the repaint. I went through all of this before when I came in. Also, I'm not allowing you to attempt to fix the problem, fail, and force me to rent a car again because you wouldn't do the proper repair."
"Well, we'll see if Chrysler will approve the repair"
"Good"
30 minutes later I get a call back. Repair approved, it's at the body shop. Why waste my time? I need to call today to make sure the body shop will still complete the fix on time after the dealer sat on it for a day.
It's just a whole lot of trouble for what is an extremely minor cosmetic issue. I already let them try to fix it once, why on earth would they think I would again?
