I don't understand why you have to pay a monthly subscription to use the damn thing. It already costs $400 bucks. Am I wrong in thinking this?

The other reason I am happy to pay the subscription fee is that I am going on vacation for a week tomorrow and I want to come home and see every second of Eagles football broadcast while I am gone. ...

No. It's what my Hauppage TV tuner and WinDVR are for. :D

VCR can't record that many games.

$12.95/month

Yes - I could record the game, but with Tivo, I will get every highlight reel, post-game analysis, coach/player interview, etc...

I just might also get every Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery movie, '24' episodes and 'The Shield' rerun

Only DirectTivo offers surround sound. The standalone units don't.

I'm a new TIVO owner and recently upgraded it with two 120GB Western Digital SE drives. Now I can record anything that sounds remotely interesting and not have to watch it till months later. There was a James Bond marathon the other month and I recorded every movie - I've watched a couple so far and will watch the others when I feel like it. Sure a PC could do the job but TIVO makes it easy to use with it's great UI and it doesn't introduce unneeded complexity to my home theater.
