My girlfriend is an enthusiastic Moore hater. My roommate is an enthusiastic Moore hater. Many other people I know are also Moore haters. I happen to like a lot of his work.
Here's my deal: whenever I have an argument with someone about Moore, it goes something like this:
Them: "Fscking Moore, I hate him!"
Me: "Why?"
Them: "He's a liar and a hypocrite!"
Me: "He's a liar? What did he say that was a lie?"
Them: "Well, he just splices stuff. He alters things to fit his agenda. He doesn't give the whole story."
Me: "Like what? Give examples."
Them: (quiet for a second) "I dunno, stuff seems kinda staged, it's just lies."
Me: "Why's he a hypocrite?"
Them: "Cause he's fat and gets rich off his movies and stuff, and then bashes rich people."
Me: "Actually, a lot of the profits from his books and movies go to charity, and he's openly stated he's cool with people downloading his movies on the internet."
Them: "But he bashes rich people, and he's rich!"
Me: "Isn't he just bashing the ethnics of some big business, rich politicians, etc? Not just being rich in general?"
It goes full circle like that for awhile. My bottom line is this:
If you don't like Moore, that's your perogative. You are entitled to disagree with him. However, Moore is a man who makes bold statements and backs them up with research, fact, etc...you look pretty stupid if you call him a liar and hypocrite but can provide absolutely no hard evidence of this yourself. One side backs himself up, the other doesn't. Everytime I argue with a Moore hater, they end up retreating and changing the subject when they are asked to back up their claims. Talk about hypocrisy.
One thing I thought was funny was when my gf went on about how he makes sh!t up for his movies, that Fahrenheit 9/11 was full of bullshit. Later, he released the 9/11 Reader showing his substantiation/research for the facts he presented. She chastissed him for being a hypocrite, "oh great, now he's out to make even MORE money!" With that kind of logic, the guy couldn't win.
