My temps

Does 40 deg c for my cpu and 34 for my case sound right at idle.
XP2500, 9700 pro 1 hard drive, cdrw, cdrom in a coolmaster wavemaster.
2 80mm front fans, 1 80mm rear fan and 1 80mm top intake fan.
All round cables. 350 watt whisperquite psu.
also, should i use the top fan as intake or outlet.

sounds ok

top fan (blowhole) should be exhausting air. Thats the usual best for airflow, and would be about right for fans in vs fans out (you should usually have the same or more exhaust fans than intake).

Top fan should prolly exhaust since heat rises naturally anyway. Those temps seem alright but 40C is maybe a bit high for idle at stock speeds on that proc. What hsf you got on the 2500?

Thats well within spec. so it's just fine

I started out with the oem fan and changed to a COMP USA fan and heat sink rated up to 3000.
Useing artic silver after a good cleaning brought the temp down to what i stated.
The comp usa brand is a no frills heat sink and fan combo. its polished copper all around.
No speed controls or censors.

I had my XP1900+ running 69 load, so be thankful.
Now it's down to 59 after cleaning the heatsink and front fan intake filter, but I might have to apply some TIM (been running the stock cooler with original pad for 2 years )

I think the top fan is already an out fan, it is in my Coolermaster ATC-201, the front two do intake, the rear and top exaust, I'd leave it like that. 40 should be fine for the CPU, but make sure you keep things clean so it doesn't rise too much.
