You could pass with a D? Major class? My college required a C or better for major classes.

a D???? Come on man, the teacher is asking you what you'd prefer, which means they are open to negotiation. Say that you would like a C and explain what you gained form the class.

Unless you want to repeat the class, get the better grade. I don't like teachers who base 90% of the grade on the finals and 10% on HW assignments.

Maybe could have told him to give you the grade based on how well he thinks you understood and learned the material. Not everyone is a great test taker. If he feels you didn't really understand the material and should take the class again, he should give you the D. If he thinks you learned the material and just may not be the best performer on his tests, then he should give you the C. Either way, he shouldn't be asking a student to help decide their own grade...it's not really fair.

Edit: Also tell him whether or not you feel you learned the material.

Are you sure you can pass with a D? Thermo isn't usually a non-core class and most schools require you get a C or better in your core classes for them to count.

That's part of life. You aren't judged on the amount of effort you put into something, but on the outcome of everything.

Eh... you might want to just check with your advisor and make sure you don't need a C to pass. Just to be safe. Wouldn't want you to not graduate. ;)

I'd definitely ask for a C. Obviously you can't ask for a A/B, but if the teacher is asking you, I think a C is definitely possible.

They are putting you on the spot to declare why you think you deserve a C or better. Standard teacher trick. If you seem satisfied with a D, then it's obvious to them that you know you didn't deserve or earn anything better.

You always end your reply with "Whatever it takes to prove this to you, I'm willing to do." and have every intention to do it... going in to talk to them or taking an extra test is a small price to pay for a better grade in school and they know this. If you can't be bothered with the effort, you don't deserve the better grade. For most classes, grades in college aren't earned in the classroom, but rather what you accomplish on your own time. I've had classes where everything taught in the lecture wasn't on the test, because that stuff is what you should know as a bare minimum... as a result of just being REGISTERED in the class.

(Now insert a lousy joke about doing something sexual. ha ha.. we get it... some of you haven't quite gotten over how cool junior high was.)

Reply to him that anything less than an A+ is an insult, and will be noted in his teacher evaluation *wink, wink*

All right...

He's just fishing for his semi-anual BJ. You can get that A+ if you really really want it.

You should've said that you thought you deserved a C and then explained why you felt that way. If you were convincing enough, your professor would have given it to you.
