my Tbird is overheating

i just recently put a 900 Tbird in my puter, and boy is it fast. but i have one complaint: the temperatures routinely rise above 150 degrees. ive been out of touch with the scene for a while, but im pretty sure thats a little warm. i have the stock hsf on there right now. it came with a thermal "pad". so when i went to put thermal compound on, i found that the pad had melted, and was doing a fine job without my help, but i applied the compound none the less and saw no improvement. what hsf should i get? im going to be water cooling it in the spring for senior project, so i dont want to go all out. also, what temps can i expect with the various hsfs out there?
 
150C? Are you sure your thermal sensor or monitoring software is accurate? Sounds way to high to be correct?

thermal pads don' typically melt neither they may phase shift, but sound like you forgot to take the cover off the pad.
 
150F, right?
What room temp and case temp/ventilation?
Anyway, buy a new HSF, and add a 120 mm fan for your case!
 
It would have to be 150F...did you clean the old melted mess off before you applied the new compound? Also, what are you using to measure the temp?
