My taxes are finished. Used an tax professional for the first time

Well, we spent the $150 or so whatever the guy was charging and whipped through our taxes in less than 45 minutes.

It was totally worth it. 🙂 Getting back a nice chunk of change too.

No worries about overclaiming/underclaiming etc... it was totally worth it. We don't have complicated taxes, but i had a little extra income and some business expenses.

Im soo sick of taxes. I interned in tax while I was in college, and I ended up getting a job in auditing because I wanted to get away from tax as far as possible.

Funny thing is that everyone I know automatically assumes that I am willing, eager, and I have the time to file their tax returns. I dont mind doing it for family, and for the last year and this year, I've filed taxes free of charge for many many friends who ask me. This is the last year I am doing anyone's taxes other than family, and gf.

I have one of my friend's tax returns sitting here in my office right now. I took it to work with me today because it has to get done. Oh yea, I asked him to give me everything about a month ago, and I only received his tax information late last week. That's very inconsiderate. I have to do an ammended return for last year as well as complete his return for this year.

But like I said, this is the last year I am doing all of these taxes for people.

Sorry, just had to vent.

I went to H&R Block this year. Normally I do my taxes online. My employer screwed up and took out the wrong state taxes, so I had to go somewhere to get the mess straightened out. (I live in WI, but work in IL, my employer should have taken WI taxes out but took out IL taxes instead...) Long story short, after seeing what they do I'll never use them again. I paid $150 to have them basically use the same type of software I can at home.

See what happens when you ignore the tax thread. Waste your money paying somebody something that you can easily do yourself.🙁

And you folks have an education and the ability to reason logically.

Yup. I referred to that thread extensively.

It's ridiculous how much work I had to spend on my taxes with a big fat $0.00 in the 1-block of my W2 🙁

this is the first year i did my taxes with just the book and the papers a couple questions aside (thanks tax thread 🙂 ) It was super easy i did my taxes in about 30 minutes my g/f's took about 2.5 hours (she has alot of sources of income and different expenses). Next year i might actually try my hand at my parents and see how i do on their taxes.

Every year I do my taxes and every year I swear the next year, we're paying somebody to do it. I'm going on record as saying that next year I'm paying somebody to do my taxes.

It's one thing if all you have a a 1040 and some standard deductions, but we're running a small business now and the amount of paperwork, receipts, totaling and summing things up, organizing, filing, etc. Every year it's getting longer and longer to do, this year I probably put in about 7 to 10 hours. I'd much rather just throw all of my receipts in to a shoe box and come next year, just hand that off to a CPA/accountant.

I normally do my own taxes, but this year I'm paying someone to take care of the mess. I have to file multiple state tax returns and deal with a bunch of confusing business travel-related details.

I could have done it myself. I've done my own taxes in the past. That is not the issue.

yea, I bill friends that do that..

simple returns (T4, maybe RRSP (canadian equiv. to W2/401k)) I'll do for $25, as the program only costs $35. Anything else added increases cost, especially those with "hobby" businesses where all their receipts are in shoeboxes...

Just buy a cheap version of quickbooks and enter the amounts as the bills roll in. Heck, some software packages will import that data for some tax software. Luckily, I get to use the software alot of accountants use for free.
