make sure the place is clean... make sure there's no smoking allowed inside.. make sure the floors are tile, and waxed/cleaned regularly... i know you got some good hygiene advice in the earlier thread.. these things i think were not mentioned... it's also true about not drinking or doing any drugs before or after... and you shouldn't smoke for a couple hours after you get the piece... smoking raises your bloodpressure and it can push some of the ink out... pretty nasty when you peel back the gauze pad a little and it's not only got blood on it, but oozy black ink mixed with bacitracin. :)

Bacitran bad :)

Mild soap (like softskin or dove) and being a decently clean person (ie, no standing under construction zones) is fine for keeping your new tatt free from germs.

From the aftercare instructions at my shop (Rising Dragon):
Take off bandage after 4 hrs. Leave overnight if late
Handwash w. soap & warm water. Do not rebandage
Use light amounts of lotion or A&D ointment 3 times a day
Don't use bacitran or triple unless you are prone to infection
Do not scratch or pick, you may smack lightly
Don't wear tight clothes. If you must wear tight clothes or work in dirty environs rebandage with a very light coating of lotion
Stay away from chlorine, saltwater, sun, and soaking in water
7-10 days to heal

The 7-10 days refers to the scabs falling off (the scabs will be colorful too, if you elect to get colors done...that won't hurt the tatt as long as you don't pull the scabs off), but (in my experience) not how long it takes for you to get over it ;)
