Just finished my first week of working my first job out of college. It was 4 PM and I get to my desk after a meeting. On my desk is this huge packet with a note:

"Please finish this project by Morning morning".

I just got out of work now.

Welcome to the real world:(

well...i just started, but I begged for work because I was so bored. Oh well....

You asked for it. Be careful what you wish for.

If stuff like this happens once and awhile - that's life...it happens.

If it happens ALL the time. Find a new job or figure something out to stop it from happening.

so you learned something today; don't ask for stuff to do on Friday. Make good use of the time by neffing on ATOT.

My old company (Fidelity) wanted you to work 12 hours a day, weekends too and be on call 24/7 and they didn't want to pay any over time, give comp days or give bonuses. You were just supposed to "take care of it" because it was such a privilege to be working there. I'm glad I'm gone. :disgust:

It's a dilemna. I'm only 21, and i've had a few internships over the summer, and it's hard to just sit around when there isn't stuff to do. Not to mention in a real job i'm sure you want to make a good impression that you get a lot done

you won't get a promotion if you just sit around, or you won't get a promotion if you try to help out extra?

they'll want to keep you where you are if you do good work. Incompetence rises up.

I have to agree with this. Now days companies don't reward a hard worker - they will keep you where you are at forever and just benefit from your work.

My old immediate boss didn't know how to read a circle graph I sent him... so he decided not to file my report to his boss (who requested it) for 1 month. Then, after a month (the guy sat RIGHT next to me, one cube over) he decides to ask me about the circle graph. I wondered why the top boss had been giving me dirty looks, he thought I had been ignoring him for a month - turns out my boss was just an incompetent prick who couldn't read a fucking circle graph.

Good thing you learned your lesson the first week out instead of after years of toiling away (like my stupid ass). Good luck with your future career. It's a jungle out there.
