Preface: I originally drafted a "What would you do?" post about a refund error I noticed on my CC. I then decided that keeping the money would probably end up being a thorn in my side when they figured out the error, and that I liked the company enough to do the right thing. Here is what happened ...

A while ago I bought 3 barstools from an online store, and due to some shipping problems their customer service had to mess with the order a little. Got that all resolved, stools came, they work great, done deal. Today, I noticed a refund for two of them on my CC bill (I didn't return anything), which was obviously a mistake. After a 15 minute phone call and several back and forth discussions, it's clear they have no idea how much they refunded me. Highlights include the service rep first determining that I owe them for only one of the refunds, then talking to a manager and determining some sort of arbitrary amount (I have no idea where they got it), and both times I literally had to say "no that's not right because I still haven't paid you enough". I'm expecting a call back tomorrow after they talk to their finance department.

I try to be an honest person, but this is just retarded...

Figure out how much you owe them, and offer to send that back. If it's less than they want, tell them to fuck off.

Problem not found.

Good on you, though.

I did! To be fair they are talking to their finance dept. because they didn't want to charge me without understanding why, but I can't believe their billing system didn't have an explanation for how this happened.

They're obviously incompetent. If you don't ever receive a call back or anything, I would just forget about it.

Definitely. I figure I'll put in the effort, and if they still come back and say "we're only charging you for one" then I'll say OK thanks and be done with it. That way it's not like I'm trying to get away with anything.

i ordered a book from amazon a while back, they sent me two copies by mistake.

so i emailed customer service, explained that i received two copies and wanted to send one back if they would please give me a shipping label

they did...and then i got a refund for the book i sent back /facepalm

i left it alone after that. it was a cheap book so i didnt feel like bothering with it after they fucked it up twice on their end.

Yeah that probably happens from time to time, for a few bucks I bet they just write it off. These stools are $129 a piece, so that's $260 the company is missing! Maybe that means less to them than it does to me, but I'd have trouble letting that slide.
