my take on the NEC ND-1300A/1100a vs liteon LDW-411S/401S

anyways, in one incarnation or the other i have had all these drives.

well technically i've owned a white ND1100A, and when i got a black case i bought a black ND-1300A.

i also have a black liteon LDW-401S (which as most know can be flashed to the 411s)

anyways.... for those not in the know, these are the 2 most common dvd writers basically.

1100a / ldw-401s = dvd+R/+rw
1300a / ldw-411s = dvd+-R/+-rw dual format

features comparison. both dual drives burn writeables at 4x. the liteon units can burn +RWs at 4x, the NEC at 2.4x. both dual format drives do -RW at 2x.

the liteons are 40x24x40x cdrs (which is why i even have a liteon, as this is why i bought it) while NEC drives are 16x10x40.

NECs are very popular, and is the drive that the HP 300 series, and tdk , buslink, iomega, etc are based on.

anyways, you'd think the liteon was better since well it seems like it is. but here is why i am sticking to the NEC. apparently its better with - media burning wise and as most people who have dvd recorders do, they will want it for backing up dvds. "backing up "

fire up liteon drive with dvd shrink 2.3 or 3.0 beta 5 and you "open" a dvd or try to back it up and you get "copy protection error cannot read encrypted data"

thus making a backup with dvd shrink impossible. maybe you could use a separate dvd rom to read the dvd, i am not sure. i do not have one on hand.

on the other hand... with the nd1100a and nd1300a which i have tested many many times. it runs smoothly and backups are a piece of cake and it has worked on every dvd player i have tried, from mintek, to apex, to sony to pioneer. on dvd+r disks to boot.

all i hope is this info saves someone the trouble later on. BTW my liteon unit had the newest firmware.

EDIT. apparently... here is the problem.

i guess the dvdrom cant normally read the encrypted dvd files. but say you have the liteon and want to use dvd shrink.

you'd have to use a program like dvddecrypter to rip the vobs, so then you could use dvdshrink on the files on your hard drive, and then make the backup with nero.

whereas with the NEC you could go directly from dvd to backup shrinked dvds, since it can read the encrypted files. and then nero. now, i am debating which drive to keep as the liteon unit does have more features (the 4x +RW and 40x cdr burn) just this extra step.

EDIT2:

i also ran both drives through dvd decrypter to copy over transformers the dvd. i'd have to say the liteon is a lot faster. the NEC could do it in 4.7x average read for the whole disk, while the Liteon was 8.3x. so the liteon read the same dvd 80% faster. this cuts full backup time for 1 dvd by about 8 minutes if you use the dvd writer as your reader since they both burn and shrink at the same time. i'm probably gonna keep the liteon since even with the extra step its a whole lot faster. yet another advantage, is my HP dvd+r disks (got them for free from my dads work) burn at 4x on the liteon, but only at 2.4x on the nec.

Thanks for the info Hans.. the office is looking for a DVD burner to use for backup purposes. Looks like we have it narrowed it down to NEC and Pioneer.

Good comparison....thanx for the heads up.

I wanna buy a lite-on 411 and i'll probably do so, but I doubt I will be doing much DVD backup.

i was thinking of buying liteon 411s tomorrow at BB for $80 after rebate? i want to copy/backup dvd movies and store data. now i am thinking that its not a great drive since it cant backup dvds as good as the other drives. is it worth spending $80 on it?

well i am keeping it for $80.

you just have to use dvddecrypter, dvd shrink then nero. its about a 30-50 minute process per dvd.

it seems like it is a lot of trouble trying to copy a dvd using anydvd, dvd decrypt, dvd shrink, img tools, then burning the image on to a dvd+r for each movie. i havent heard you guys talking about the popular dvdxcopy. what are the advantages between the two, Shrink vs. XCopyXpress?

A. shrink is easier to use. B. shrink is free.

dvddecrypt is free also. its a matter of clicking, RIP, then opening shrink and clicking "backup" and then nero to burn. i guess its not that bad.
