After three weeks of using my T40 (spec listed below), I find many things I like and couple of things I don't like about the laptop. Overall, this is the best laptop I've ever used and I used many laptops in the past four years 🙂
-----------------------------------------
IBM T40
P-M 1.6GHz
512MB DDR SDRAM
80GB HDD
CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
14" SXGA+ LCD
ATI M9 32MB DDR
Dual-band Wireless (802.11a/b)
Bluetooth and Modem
Gigabit Network
-----------------------------------------
+ Performance: Very good. It's performance meets all of my expectation. The ATI M9 32MB is fast enough for every games that I play at 1024x768 resolution. I can run BF 1942 at 1400x1050 with default setting smoothly 🙂 (5/5)
+ Battery Run Time: With average usage, I can get about 4 hrs on standard 6cell battery. This is very good compare to 2 hrs on my Sony GRX570 (with its massive 16"UXGA LCD and P4m 1.6GHz). With intense usage, the battery last about 2.5-3 hrs. (5/5)
+ Built Material and Quality: I was very impress with the T40 built quality initially. But after use it for about three weeks, I find couple of small problems that enough to annoy me. The problems includes the flimsy feeling of the left palmrest, the touchpad button is a little bit loose (on mine is the left button). Overall, the built quality is still very good but not perfect. The T40 top cover is magnesium composite with titanium base. This make the T40 a very sturdy machine. (4.5/5)
+ LCD Screen: The 14" SXGA+ LCD is the best of its class. I used many laptops with 14" SXGA+ LCD and T40 simply have the best LCD of them all. The viewing angle are the same with other 14"SXGA+ LCD but the T40 LCD have superior clairty and display white color closest to the true white (based on my eyes). (5/5)
+ Size and Weight: Very light for its class and look very professional (all IBM T series laptop look very professional anyway). The laptop is merely 1" at the thinnest section and about 1.2" at the thickest section. The weigth is about 5lbs with 6cell battery and optical drive. (5/5)
+ Keyboard and Pointing Device: The keyboard have a good tactile feeling but the touchpad button feel a little bit loose. I always have a mouse with me so this is not a problem but a little bit annoying none the less consider this is $3000 laptop. (4/5)
+ Network Connectivity: Mine comes with Dual-band Wireless (a/b), gigabit network and bluetooth. The wireless connection is flawless and the set up program (IBM Access Connect) from IBM is very good. I have no problem getting connection at all. (5/5)
+ Warranty Services: IBM service is top notch. I call TS about the noise problem and the TSR quickly sent me a new AC Adapter which reduce the noise considerably. TSR also pick up the phone very quickly. Of all four times I call (about various issues), I get someone to answer the phone very quickly (less than a min wait generally). (5/5)
Overall, I give this laptop 4.8/5. This is simply the best laptop money can buy right now consider its weight, design, functionality, and performance. There are few problems with this laptop and I list them below.
1) Electrical Noise: The noise reduces considerably with the replacement AC Adapter and the GPU trick.
2) Flimsy left size palmrest:
3) Touchpad button is a little bit loose (mine is the left side button). This annoy me the most now but I figure I rarely use the touchpad so it doesn't really matter 🙂
4) The arrow keys on the right side of the keyboard is a little bit flimsy. This is because there is no screw to lock the keyboard there.
