I have used this laptop for almost a week now and it is time to share my experiences with the rest of you guys or any potential buyers. I got this laptop for the upcoming school year as I am now a college freshman hehe. So I called Thinkpaddepot on Monday, ordered it via phone and the package arrived the VERY SAME day evening via fedex. However Canada customs held it until Tuesday evening before they released it. When I arrived at the Fedex pickup location, it is stored in another box since the Customs broke the security seal to check the contents. When I went home, unpacked everything, here is when the WOW factor kicks in:

First Look:
Just by holding at it, one can feel the quality and design. It just feels and looks different than anything I have come across in local computer stores. It boasts a feel of pride, prestige and high class. I am sure all other T40P owners agree with me here. Many people complained that IBMs are UGLY and I was skeptical about the cosmetics at first. But surprisingly, it looks DAMN GOOD. Now I CALL EVERY other laptops cheap plastic toys haha. That is how much different the T40 stands out among others.

Construction Materials:

The top cover is made of sturdy magnesium composite which is impact resistant and lightweight (in fact lighter than ABS plastic). Magnesium is one of the lightest metals around.

The keyboards and palm rest are made of plastic. One might ask why not make metal palm rest? Well, I don?t think it is gonna feel very good in winter :p

The bottom is made of Titanium composite. NOT PLASTIC!! You can tell by HOW strong the fan grilles are on the left side of the laptop. There are exposed unpainted titanium at the battery bay. Before you snap in the battery, you can seen grey silverfish metal. THAT is TITANIUM. My dad is a material engineer so he practically confirmed it for me.
FUN NOTE: You can start a fire with the T40. Since the LCD cover is magnesium, just shave some powder off, light it and you will have a 3000C flame. If your plane/boat is marooned on a island and if ur T40 is with you, you can start a fire signal.

LCD Screen:
BEHOLD..the bringer of light?the 1400X1050 Screen looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS?it beats my 17 inch SAMSUNG monitor dead. No complaints about the screen. DVD playback looks fluid..no signs of slow pixel response. Colours are natural and bright. View angle is also great. NO Complaints about the screen here.

Keyboard:
Again, IBM?s superior constructions shows again. The keyboard are JUST SWEEET?the key size, spacing and tightness are just about perfect. In fact I had no problem adapting to it and it feels very close to my black Logitech cordless optical freedom keyboard that I have used for 2 years.

Speakers:
YAYAYA..i know all laptop speakers are weak..sounds thin blah blah..well of course they are not going to sound like your desktop cousins. The IBM Speakers thou lacks bass, but have superior clarity. So instruments and details sounds sharp and detailed and they are not as bad as most pple think. I play internet radio on it several hours a day and have no complaints.

General Usage/performance:
I loaded PS7, Corel 11 on the machine and behold?they ran on par if not faster than my XP2700 desktops. Everything is snappy?from load times, program responsiveness. Sometimes I even forget that I am on a laptop. NO GAMES here as I adhere the strict policies of GAMELESS on laptop except desktop. You can ask other T40P owners how well the FireGL9000 64MB DDR performs.

Final thought:
I am very happy with this purchase, perhaps one of my best. I never had an IBM in my life before and I am rejoiced to have made this choice..THANKS GOES to ANAND members who recommended this model wholeheartedly! My money is WELL SPENT on this..absolutely NO COMPLAINTS.

Thanks also GOES to the guys at thinkpaddepot for their speedy services and quality!

Well if you guys have more questions..feel free to ask.

Well if you guys have more questions..feel free to ask.

Did you have to pay customs duties and taxes?

I see that thinkpaddepot is selling it for US$2700. By my count, that's CAN$3750. Was that how much you paid for it?

Richiez..is that the US IBM EPP Ur talking about? I can use the canadian EPP but the 2373G1U is not available on the EPP.

Yes it is the US IBM EPP, I'm a summer co-op there and I'm looking at the prices. But my school gets better prices and I think I dont' have to pay tax, just waiting for a quote, cuz they only have prices for the T40's, not the T40P's.

T40P's availaible on US IBM EPP:
ThinkPad T40p
2373G3U
$2,787.15*

ThinkPad T40p
2373G5U
$2,744.65*

ThinkPad T40p
2373G1U
$2,591.65*

Prices are lower than the EPP price, lots of schools get really steep discounts.

That is a sweet deal. From IBM.ca that model costs a thousand dollars more, tax included [CAN$5300].

Now I still have to decide if I want to spend $4300 on a laptop... :p

ALL $$ in CDN$ :)

Hello One & All,

So, nanyangview, I have a quick question. I have been told that the T40's case has like a "RUBBER" feel to it. I have read that also and that it feels great. When you pick the laptop up, the rubber gives you a solid grasp. No more feeling like is going to slip out of your hand. Can you shed some ownership light on the subject?

Also, speaking of light, how well does the light work in dim lighted conditions?

I am looking into getting one, but just have not made up my mind yet. THANKS!

seidell23112:

that is correct..unlike other latpops that use exposed metal..IBM use this rubber like coating on the T40 cover which gives u really good grip. It is safe to even hold it with one hand. Dun worry thou..even though it feels like rubber, the prestige is still there. I carried the lappy with my hand wet once and it did not even feel a bit slippery.

the thinklight works great..i can even use it as a small reading lamp in critical situations haha. It works really well for the keyboards. No need to carry a lame USB light around.

So u should BUY the T40 NOW..i promise you will not be disappointed

nanyangview,

Sounds GREAT, but here is my problem. I am also looking at a Voodoo with P4 3.2/HT, ATI 9600/128 and Raid 0&1. You have the IBM, so you know it. With that knowledge and you had not purchased the IBM yet, which would you choose if money was no issue??

That is my situation.. So, can you advise! THANKS!

Ya unless the light has changed from whats in the T20,T21,T23,T30 I dont' see how you can use the the little light on the lip of the LCD as a reading lamp. But regardless of that fact, the Thinkpad T series is excellent (thats why we have so many of them :D) and I'll be getting a T40P soon.

VoodooPC laptops are huge, its acutally made by Sager I think. Desktop P4 chip, its fast but its very heavy and the battery life sucks. So it really depends what you want, if you want a desktop replacement (u rarely take it anywhere) then the VoodooPC is the right choice, anything else the T40 wins (well the video card isn't as good for games).

Edit, hahaha if you are looking at that model its 10.8LBS! The T40 is like 5lbs.

i would not even classify voodoo or sager LAPTOPS AS LAPTOP..in fact sager laptops DISGUST The hell out of me..

sure u you can get it if you do not mind 30 min battery life, nut roasting temperature at the bottom, 10LB anchor (if u on a boat and forget to bring an anchor, those lap works great)

Seeing the fact that IBM T40p cost more than the voodoo, i would still get the T40P period. YOu will be a lafing stock in ur school to carry one of those Voodoo or sager laptops.
