My T-Bird 1.1ghz is quite hot!!!

I ran a Prime95 torture test after putting my machine together, which is a KT7A-RAID, T-Bird 1.1ghz (using standard fan provided in the retail box), and I got around 45-46 degrees Celsius max. I soon finished with a modified Chrome Orb (using a file to shave down the edges, so it could fit without hitting the two capacitors on the side). Well, during that process, I got a little dirt on the thermal paste that was already on the Chrome Orb. I scratched some off, then put the Chrome Orb on. Immediately, my CPU temperature was running in the mid 40s after bootup, and a torture test brought me up to over 50, when I decided to close it. I didn't want to fry my CPU or anything. My initial reaction was that something was really wrong with the Chrome Orb, but I noticed the thermal paste melted onto the CPU, and now there's damn dirt on the chip. I can't get it off! I scraped off some clean thermal paste, and stuck it all over the chip, hoping to cool it down better. I then remounted the AMD fan, which brought me to 58+ on torture tests. It didn't seem to go up after some 15 seconds at 58 C, so I just shut it down, not wanting to fry this CPU. I now know it is the dirt that caused all the problems. How can I get it off? As I'm typing now, my CPU temp is at a low 34 C, since I'm not doing much. Could someone help me?

Depending on your retail fan/hs combo, it could be better then a chrome orb anyway ;) Some of the TAISOL stuff I think rocks, but I am not sure. Depends what you get with it. You could simply try sanding the dirt off, but be really careful! You can sand some of the core top, it !Shouldnt! damage it.

The main problem is that the c-orb really isn't effective past 950/1ghz chips. The reason for the "appearance" of it performing well is due to poor testing methodology, and a tendency for the orb heatsinks to "cheat" socket-thermistor readings.

I would highly suggest the stock heatsink. Considering you hvae a 1.1ghz t-bird, ti comes with the taisol cek733092, and this sucker outperforms both the SuperOrb and ChromeOrb.

So, I should basically stay with my fan with the T-Bird 1.1, since its a Taisol CEK733092, which should outperform the Chrome Orb? Well, in any case, I know that dirt's severely affecting my ability to cool my CPU, because of that sudden 10+ C temperature jump in my torture tests. My main problem is on how to get the dirt off. Someone suggested to me about wiping it off with some nail polish remover, which I haven't tried yet. Would that work? Are there other ways to get it off without potentially damaging my CPU?

The taisol should definately outperform the orb.

To get the dirt off teh cpu, you cna try either rubbing alcohol, goo-gone, butane, vegetable oil, nail polish remover, among other things. That should get rid fo the dirt.

If you use something other than rubbing alcohol first, remember to wipe it off with alcohol before putting grease on.
