My system won't start

Red Storm

Lifer
I just recently purchased a lot of new parts for my system. Among them are the Asus P5B MB, an E6300, 2GB Corsair RAM, a Seagate 250GB HD, and an Antec 550 NeoHE PS. I'm still in the process of buying a video card, so for the time being I've got an ATI X300 in there. Now when I turn on the system, it starts up and the PSU and CPU fan are both spinning. The thing is, my monitor won't display anything (It says "No Input Signal"), and my DVDRW won't open (it's light is always on, but won't respond). I'm hoping I just did something wrong, and it's not a faulty part. Any idea what might be wrong?

are you positive you have the GPU in the PCI Express slot?
and completely unplug your dvdrw drive so you can try to find the source of your problem easier

Ok, starting with or without the DVDRW didn't make a difference. I tried the analog cable on the GPU (as opposed to the DVI), but still nothing. I even tried a PCI VGA card, but even that didn't work. Could it be something with the hard drive? Or the motherboard?

hmmm, if you even switched GPU's....you may have a bad mobo on your hands 🙁

(an hd problem wouldn't make your GPU not work while posting)

A bad mobo? But I just installed a Big Typhoon on it! I guess that would explain the DVDRW problem too.

*sigh* Oh well, I guess it's back to work...

i mean, if you switched out GPU's, & it still wont display on your monitor...thats really not a good sign

Are you sure that the vga / dvi cables that you used are good?

Yeah, I used two types, including one that was just being used in another system. A bad mobo would explain the optical drive problem though, wouldn't it?

Red Storm;

Do you know what bios version you have?

It is a known fact, that if your mb has the first version, it won't start, or boot with the Conroe cpu.

If that's the case, then you will have to borrow, or buy a cheap Celeron, to get it running, and flash the bios to the lastest version(0211,0309), if you have the vanilla P5B.

Or the other option, is to send it to Asus to flash the bios for you, cause the chip is not removeable.

I know because i have the same board.

I don't know which bios version it is. Perhaps it is a bios problem, but is there anyway I can flash it myself? I really don't want to take off the Big Typhoon if I don't have to.

I've also read about the 1.8v memory problem with the P5B board. My Corsair is 1.9v; should I try to find some 1.8v RAM or do you guys think the memory ain't the problem?

Red Storm; I don't think that the Corsair memory voltage is a problem with the P5B board, because it is flexible on auto, and has a range of 1.80v> 2.10v. Do yourself a favor and please read the manual that came with the mb!

I think you are thinking of some of the Intel boards, that only want 1.8v. I maybe wrong, but if you could get into the bios settings, you would find that the memory voltage default setting is auto, and won't have a problem with your memory, because of it's wide range.

It is also possible that one of the sticks is bad, did you try one at a time, in slot A1?

But I'll stick to what I first said, and that is your sol, if you don't have an other cpu( other then a Conroe) to boot up with.

Well my dad has a Pentium D so I'm gonna try booting with that tonight, and we'll see what happens. For bios updating, which is the best/easiest method?

Best = use teh floppy method IMO.

However, you can use USB memory sticks too now.

Refer to the manual, as it outlines the possible methods IIRC.

Red Storm; let me get this straight.

Your going to remove your father's cpu from his computer?

Does he know? What are you going to use for a thermal pad between the cpu, and the hsf unit.

If it does work, and you can install windows, the easiest way is to use the "asus Update utility"on the the Asus support cd, that came with the mb. If you use the computer your using now, and go to the Asus web site, and download the most updated bios, from the support section, which should be, either 0211, or 0309, and copy it to a floppy, you can use this application thru windows to install it. Once again, read the manual on how to do this!

Then you should be able to swap out cpu's and your system should run fine! If your running XP, or XP-Pro, without doing a reinstall again.

But I'm concerned. How are you going to clean off your father's cpu, and reinstall it without thermal paste? I would seriously think about what your doing.

Good luck!

Well I already did it, with the same result. I'm now 99.99% sure the motherboard is just faulty. That seems to best explain the additional problems I'm having with my dvd burner and rom. I've applied for an RMA with ZZF, so I'll be shipping it out tomorrow or maybe monday.
