My system is stable as a rock as long as I don't set the resolution to 1024x768

I have a Leadtek Geforce3 Ti200 TDH and a Shuttle AK31 Kt266a motherboard. I've been trying to figure out why my system crashed in any game I tried and when I used 3DMark2001. The weird thing is that it is VERY random. Sometimes I can get entirely through 3DMark without any errors, but other times it gives me errors at different places each time. That was with 1024x768 resolution. I decided to change the resolution down to 800x600, and it worked fine. No problems in games or 3DMark. I set the resolution higher than 1024x768 and I still have no troubles. Why on earth does it refuse to work just in 1024x768? I about blew my top when I found out that such a miniscule detail is the reason for my instability. That's very peculiar, has anyone else experienced this behaviour?

EDIT: I tried the 23.11, 22.83, and 22.5 drivers with these same results.

see if you can run 3dmark in 800x600 (cant remember if you can change it), and have your desktop at 1024x768. i know there are some instances where you cant run a program at the same resolution as your desktop. :|

are you using the leadtek drivers? try using the new nivida detanor ones (that came out last week), they might help fix the problem. Also you might wanna just try going into the bios and setting the AGP aperature to mabye 2x or something like that, then check if you can run in 1024

I did a search on my problem and it looks like I'm not alone. Did you ever get this figured out?

I have a Gainward GF3ti200. If I use the drivers that came with the card, it works fine. If I update from the Gainward site, it works fine. If I use anything off the Nvidia site, 1024 does not work but everything else does. It's wierd, but that's how it is.

I can only use Gainward's drivers apparently. I'd have thought Nvidia's were even better, but whatever. Once I figured this out, I'm mostly happy again. The GF3 is fast enough that I'd really never notice the couple of percent difference that the latest drivers would make. (I know the latest is always the best, but honestly all my games run beautifully, so I don't miss that little difference).

It sounds to me like it could be one of three things: a problem with the drivers, a problem with the video card, or possibly a problem with the monitor.

I had a problem one time a few years ago where I couldn't get a certain resolution but I could get above and below 800x600(on my old 14") with full color. Then something happened inside the monitor and I could suddenly get 800x600 but only 8bit color. It would crash and freeze if I tried anything else. I thought it was just a limitation but I took the monitor in and the electronic tech said that something was burnt out in it and he replaced the small part and then I could get back all my resolutions again as well as any bit depth in color.

I'm not saying that this is the problem, but I would try my machine out with a different monitor that you know works fine, whether it be a spare or a friend's monitor. I kicked myself for not checking it for so long cause I thought it was the card.

When running 3dmark are you getting popup error messages or does it just freeze up on you? are you using geforce tweak utility because if you use the presets they give you it can cause errors if your hardware can't keep up
