My system is so quiet!

Got a few things last week to make my system quieter, since it's being used as a HTPC, and it's in my bedroom.

Specs:

Antec P180
eVGA NF-41 SLI
Athlon 64 3000+ Venice
eVGA 7800GTX 256MB
1GB Corsair ValueSelect PC400

I installed a Scythe Ninja on the 3000+, and found that I can run it fanless with no problems :). I have both the top and back 120mm fan's working, but reduced to about 700rpm each. The CPU idles at around 32, and load is around 45 (hot, but manageable). Case temps idle at 45, and go up to 52 under load.

The 7800GTX has a Accelero X1 on it, and it's idling at about 56 degrees. It's pretty much silent.

Temp's are on the high side, but the system is 100% stable. It's been on for the past two weeks recording shows through Media Center and it works perfectly. And it's completely inaudible, especially once I reduced the northbridge fan speed to 1500rpm. I bought a Zalman heatsink for it, but I couldn't get the damn eVGA heatsink off, so I gave up. Oh well, the fan is almost completely inaudible.

that CPU load isn't bad, mine under load is the low 40s but when the room temp was about 80-ish degrees F it would peak out at about 48 degrees C. Considering the throttle temp is something like 60 C you should be fine up to 50 C or slightly higher I'd think.

If I'm wrong about the max temps let me know, I'm still getting used to these cool running A64s after having a T-bred that sat around 50 C :D

I've got no idea :). I think that a 50-55 degree temp for CPU should be at the top of your safe zone, but then again, what do I know?

50-55 is perfectly fine, I wouldn?t be concerned until you start to see 65-70c.

The CPUs are built to run upwards of 80C, I think my mobile XP is rated to 100C or some insane temp like that. I'd never run it that hot, but it's supposedly possible.

ORIGINAL POST, i dont understand how your air cooled CPU is cooler than ambient case temperature... how is that possible?

Once you start going down the road of silence you will never understand how you lived before.

I've recently upgraded and ordered the 7600GT from evga, as well as a Zalman VF900 to quiet it down.

Unfortunately one of the Zalman mounting bolts came damaged, so while waiting for the new hardware to come I have been stuck with the stock evga cooler. Web surfing it spins down a bit but wow does this thing get loud.

Silencing my computer has likely been my most enjoyable upgrade of all time. I've gotten several people hooked on it as well.

Isn't it great running silent? Not sure why you bought an X1 to repl the stock GTX cooler. Isn't the 7800GTX cooler same as the one on a 7900GTX? Because my 7900GTX cooler is as silent as my X1 was on my 7800GT.

No need. At this points, my temps are low enough that I'm happy, and I honestly can't hear the system at all. It's really one of the best upgrades I've ever made.

I don't know if it's the same cooler, but I do know that it's a LOT quieter then my 7800GTX's cooler.

You could get a fan controller and crank up the fans while playing games but take them down further while surfing the web, etc.

But that would reduce the "quiet factor" though. Nonetheless, it is a good suggestion.

7900GTX is very quiet, I think the cooler on it was only on the 7800GTX 512's though, and there was a different, crapper, one on most normal 7800s.

It's odd you got a 7600 GT and bought a zalman cooler for it, why not just get one of the 3rd party ones with just a large heatsink on? Meh.

I wish I could recreate how loud my PC was and compare it directly to it now. It's hard to keep track of just how much quieter it is because after the first few major modifications, like CPU cooler, GFX card/cooler, replacing stock fans, the levels drop really gently.
