My system is SLOOOOOOOOOW!

I'm really having a hard time figuring this one out. I went from a P4 2.6C, 64 meg Ti4200 @ 300/600 to a 3200+ Winchester and a BFG 6800OC w/unlocked shader and pipes. Unfortunately I don't have any previous benchmarks with the P4 to compare it to, but I am familiar with how UT2k4 felt with that setup. It feels very similar to that now, at least in UT.

I ran the Dria benchmark from this nV News article and I got the following results:

1024x768: 36.212
1280x960: 34.72
1600x1200: 31.207

This is with sound disabled, all other settings at maximum. I uninstalled and reinstalled UT with the latest patch to make sure nothing was screwed up in my previous install.

I also ran 3dmark 01, 03, and 05 to see if it was related to my UT install:

2001se: 14784
2003: 9203
2005: 2108

These also seem very low for my setup. 3dmark05 was a 1fps slideshow for a large part of the benchmark. I even saw the fps counter dip to zero on a few occasions.

I'm running the 61.77 drivers, which granted aren't the latest. I'm only using these older ones to avoid RivaTuner's confusion about what card I have installed. AA and Aniso are both disabled in control panel, and vsync is OFF.

I've really only played HL2 with this setup and it DOES feel significantly faster than my old setup, but UT and 3dmark are both pretty poor. Can anyone shed some light on what might be causing this lousy performance?

Yes, I'm running bios 1008 on my board (latest final release) and with the exception of my Detonator drivers, they're all current.

maybe you should update your detonator drivers

BTW, those scores sound about right for a regular 6800. is it possible your softmod really didnt work?

it still only says 128meg DDR

but still to me, even with a 128 meg card, those scores seem low. have you tried latest detonater drivers?

well you can't mod a 128meg card to a 256 dufus :p

I ran the latest official detonators for a bit (didn't benchmark), but I was a bit uneasy having RivaTuner not recognize my card properly, so I went back to the previous version. I'll give the new ones a whirl after my comp crashes (or has been up for 3 days) as I'm currently trying to figure out another problem. :)

Bump for the morning crew. :) Can someone please run the UT2k4 benchmark to see how your system shapes up? It doesn't have to be the same. I just want to get a reference point of how my system is performing.

I have a 2.3ghz Athlon Barton with the BFG 6800 OC, and I get 10,560 in 3dmark03, so something is amiss.

You have the latest motherboard chipset drivers installed, right?

Yes, I downloaded all of the drivers from Asus when I built the system earlier this month.

Ok, I tried the latest official Detonators. They caused my computer to BSOD upon quitting UT2k4. I did manage to get another 7 fps in the 1280x960 test in UT. I went through bios and noticed that I was still running a divider on my RAM, so it was only running @ 166. I reran 3dmark 2005 and actually LOST 43 points! I'm now down to 2065.

Bump for hope. Anyone care to run 3dmark05 or run the UT2k4 benchmark with my 61.77 drivers? I'm really torn between trying beta drivers and homing in on what's causing my instability problems.

I assume you're tried runnign everything at stock speeds? Also do you have the latest chipset drivers for your system?

When you look in your computer's device manager, nothing has an exclamation point by it, right?

And, you didn't somehow set memory to be asynchronous in your bios or something? Just can't figure out your scores, as your Athlon64 should be beating my Barton.

Get this program: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php#download And let us know what it says under clocks on the 1st CPU tab, and then on the memory tab, what does it say?

In addition, Run memtest86 to make sure your ram is fine. Run adaware, spybot, etc as noted on the "sticky" in the Software forums to make sure you dont have nasties running around in the background. Also, run your computer with side off, ground yourself, and see if any one of your heatsinks are hot to the touch - esp the graphics card and cpu heatsink, followed by harddrives and ramsticks.

Your 2003 score seems on the money. I got 10-11k on 3DMark03 with a 6800GT at Ultra speeds with a 2.0 Ghz A64.

But I get almost 11,000 in 3dmark03, and I have a normal Athlon Barton at 2.3ghz. He should at least be doing better than me...

You can't compare a Barton Vs an A64 in 3DMarks. 5-10 FPS more in HL2 sounds a lot better than 800-1200 points in a benchmark program.

Running you memory that slow was probably what was stuffing up your 3dmark01 and ut2004 benches which are mostly cpu bound, bet they are much better now.
3dmark05 is almost completely gpu bound, so I wouldn't expect changing your cpu/memory speed to have much effect.

I do have the latest drivers for all of my components (except the detonators). There are no exclamation points in device manager. I DID find that my memory was set async in bios before (see previous post in this thread) but that only LOWERED my 3dmark05 score! CPUZ confirms my memory to be running @ 200, cpu @ 2.0, timings @ 2.5-3-3-8. I did run spybot and adaware. Both came up with nothing.

Thanks for the insight, sbuckler. Troubleshooting a video card issue should (in theory) be easier to track down than the rest of the system.

Personally, I don't care about benchmarks as long as the actual games are fast. I only started running benchmarks when I noticed that my framerates in UT2k4 were sluggish. :( Situations like this make me want to reformat and try again. :|
