Hi
I just built and overclocked my system for the first time.
I'm a tech newbie so take it easy on me...please..lol.
My system is running loud and judging by my intuition I'm thinking that it has to do with the fan speeds and my zalman 9500 cooler.I haven't adjusted the settings on either of these yet and I don't know how.Any suggestions????Help me tech gods..please lol!
Here are my system stats...

thermaltake armor jr. case black
ocz 700w power supply
evga nvidia 680i sli motherboard
intel core 2 duo e6400 clocked to 3.2 ghz
zalman 9500 cooler
ocz high performance ddr2 gold 667mhz speed
2 western digital 250 gb sata harddrives
creative labs x-fi soundcard
xfx 7600 gt xtreme graphics card
plextor 716a dvd drive
lite-on dvd drive
Windows xp pro

a good way of locating a noisy fan is to momentarily stop each fan one by one by placing your finger on the center of the fan being careful to not get your fingers in the blades.

to slow down the fans you can do in the diy way and do the 7 volt trick, or buy a fan controller.

Doesn't the Zalman come with the Fan Mate 2? Also the motherboard may be able to control the fan speeds (or may not). Just check in BIOS where it monitors the temperatures.

Tech repair 101, eliminate each potential problem until your get to the Root Cause. Stop each fan, as has been suggested, theo ones that are the sound violators will become readily evident

Don't stop your CPU fan though. :p

It's most likely the power supply or GPU fan. The GPU fan is pretty easy to replace, but the you're pretty much stuck with the PSU.

Also, 700W was massive overkill for that system. ;)

sure. remove every single fan in the system. of course, your system will only run about 5 min at a time before freezing, and don't even think of playing games...

Its fine to stop the cpu fan for the <5 seconds you need to stop it to gauge its loudness. Temps may rise 1 or 2c at the most.

all you need to know is here.

find the source, and find the solution there. My guess is you can eliminate a good deal of the noise by eliminating some case fans or maybe replacing them with quieter ones. Second choice would be to put a vga silencer on the vid card. Third would be replacing the zalman with a heatsink+nexus fan combo.
Also check out rivatuner to adjust the fan speed of the gfx card (might not be possible with your card). One last suggestion: make your fans aren't blowing directly towards cables or anything as this will not only increase noise, but will also make your system run hotter. So remove cable clutter! You may also try tinsnipping the fan cages. there are a ton of ways to silence your system, it is just a matter of how far you are willing to go.

Simple solution is too slow down your fans. I'd hope a high end motherboard like that can control the speed of several fans - there should be settings in the bios to do this (obviously you need to have plugged the fans into the motherboard). If you want more control turn off motherboar fan control and download and install speedfan - you can then setup fan speeds in windows.

Its the zalman ........it roars like a hawk!!!
Maybe i'm just too idealistic..thinking that my system could be totally silent
(or its just my noobieness).I turned the knob too silent mode on the device that came with it..but it's fairly loud.It sounds like I turned on an actual house fan.

I have to admit its a very beautiful sight to watch that blue lcd light spin and glow in the dark along with the blue lcd light from the armor junior case fan and the blue lcd light from the ocz power supply...sorry i went on a tangent..I built a computer by myself!!!!Im proud of myself !!!Lol

So I don't see any options in the bio's of my MB for fan speeds....any solutions to take the sound of a hawk...to a more serene canary?

Hi,

Which Zalman is that.

I have tried teh Zalman 9500 and it is load. It's actually an excellent cooler, but the fan lets it down: far too small for starters.

The 9700 may be better.

What I do is run my computers out of the case to test them. I reject any cooler if I can hear it from 3 ft away after running the CPU at 100% load for an hour or two.

There is no such thing as a silent system. Even if you cooled everything passively and installed solid state hard disks you will then only hear the inductor sing/whine in regulators on the motherboard and power supply.

It's quite possible to make a near silent system though.

LOL.
i think when we speak of silence here, we speak of perceived noise. If i can't hear it, it is silent :)
