i have a 3com superstack 3 3300 24 port switch and it's very loud. i only use about 10 ports max. the switch has 2 80mm fans spinning at a very high rate. is it safe if i disconnect one of the fans?
Replace it with a compable product with only 16 ports thats quieter. I would check out the fans and see why they are loud, maybe bad bearings or excessive dust. Other than that I wouldn't touch them. They are there for a reason as deathkoba said and removing one will probably lead to problems.
16 Port Dell Powerconnect 2716 GB Switch would be my choice. Can easily be had for $125. They can be used in managed/unmanaged mode. I use the 8 port (2708) one right now and love it. There was a seller on eBay dumping new ones for $100.
