OP's argument is bogus in this age. In order for armed militias to place a check on government actions, they would need access to everything our military has and even then they would be at a serious numbers disadvantage. It's time for people in the US to give up that quaint idea.

What's happening in Syria right now is a great example of this. A mass of people with AK47's are being pushed around by a military with relatively basic equipment. In any modern industrial nation, it is next to impossible for the people to depose their government without their military's support or neutrality. And if the US military decided not to defend the government, an angry mob with pitchforks could overthrow them.

Coming from a delusional anti-gun hippie, that's precious.

Yes, yes, let's all be as paranoid as gun-toting Americans and everyone will be so much happier. I'm a hippie because there is nothing outweighing the cons of guns in each and every thugs hands. Obviously the best way to control the democratic system is by having guns, which is why the American political system works SO GOD DAMN WELL. Good for you, brah. You bitch and moan when reform restricts your "freedom" but still you don't march on Washington and bring the establishment down at gun point. Go for it, protect your freedom.

You mean people who disagree with you? I'm pretty sure it's people in your vicinity that needs protection. Not you. You really don't seem mentally fit enough to have a gun.
I bet all your man-friends are jealous of you manly manners, keeping a gun around to protect yourself from people on the internet.

You might remind them that "gun nuts" are the reason Americans don't bow to a king, and Sweden does.

We don't. We have a monarch, but one with no political power. We have a prime minister and a parliament working in a democratic fashion. Also, gun nuts are not the reason Americans don't bow to a king. Just like gun nuts were not the cause of the French Revolution.

You think way, WAY too highly of yourself.

Syria's military has what most military has, artillery, tanks, attack heilos, migs and pretty decent communications. im not sure what you mean by basic military, are you meaning primitive?

It would probably take half an hour for any police to actually show up. However, if you call them and tell them you have a gun and shoot it while on the phone, they be there to arrest you promptly.

What a great thread! A clueless drunken Swedish muppet and trickster Moonbeam channeling the Great Tomato Worm, along with the occaisonal bemused adherent to guns/no guns laws trying to figure out how the story fits in to the eternal argument.

Funniest read of the day, so far.
