I have the strangest problem with my setup.

What I Got:
3 computers, Dynamic IP(ugh. earthlink), 1 DSL modem and 1 5port hub.

Original Setup:
This is how everyone recommends
(Poormans network. Nic 1 and 2 are in server. Server is ICS to everyone)

DSL modem ->Nic 1
Computer -> Nic 2 -> Hub <- 2 other computers.

Problem:
Turn on ICS and share. But with this config I cant access many sites like gap.com, disney.com, napster, or pop email.

Setup 2:
My very own Idiots Solution.
(Im not sure if this is right so please correct me. Server only uses 1 NIC!)

DSL modem (crossover cable. NOT TO UPLINK) -> Hub <- computers(3)

Everyone logs in with WinPoET and everyone gets an IP (since earthlink is dynamic)

I dont get how this worked but it did. If any networking geniuses want to tell me if this makes sense, isnt safe, slows me down or whatever, then please post it (or email monkemon@hotmail.com).

I was going to buy a DSL router but with this config i get an IP for everyone. If buying a Router now would be a waste then please tell me.

Earthlink just isn't keeping track of IP's, go for it! I'm on @Home and you have to use a special hostname or go static, so getting extras isn't an option.

Where I live @home doesn't seem to track ips either, b/c I have been able to get two by doing the exact same thing. Just claim stupidity if they ever find out, hehe ;)

The easiest thing you can do is to connect your DSL modem direcly to the hub (uplink port or regular port with crossover cable), and connect all your computers to other ports. Install WinPoET on each computer and you don't even need ICS enabled. Besides speeding up things, you don't have to have your server up all the time, all the computer computers are independent from each other. Hope that helps,

Im doing exactly what Andry said. Is there any negative to that? Like, Can i get in trouble for using 3 IP's at once? Im a newbie at this so I have no idea on what is best.

anyone know if this is possible with RoadRunner? i'm in so calif and after an "upgrade" it seems they messed up on their dhcp so i can change my IP# at will (last timei tried to change iP# was about a month or two ago).

doing the cable modem --> hub <--- #pc's with Winpoet?

If they catch you plead stupidity. maybe "I thought my modem had it's own IP and was giving me fake ones behind it. Isn't that NAT?" Actually, you can do that with Cisco modems. :)

There's no downside assuming they don't try to charge you for service you stole, which is why you say you didn't know you were stealing. Pin the blame on them for letting in systems...

DHCP doesn't mean you can;'t make up your own IP, doing that just screws up anyone that hapopned to have that IP already. Depends on thier service if you can do it too.. I've never been on a ppoe connection but looking at my cable router it seems it uses a login, which would lead me to assume they'd block extra access. Try it out? If there's logins they can track you easier though.

Run the DSL(cross over)->Hub<-computers. That is way it is suppose to be done (DSL documentation even shows this type of arrangement). The multi user performance hit will be less.

Your ISP will not have a problem with you using multiple computers on your DSL serivce. Your line is already dedicated with a set max. bandwidth, WTF do they care how you use it.;):)

I really don't know how I slept at night before I had DSL...:D
