My stock Socket A fan is driving me insane.

Since I built my new rig my backup rig is near my head when I'm sleeping and it's driving me insane. I had always thought that it was my PSU creating the high pitched whine but after replacing it with an Antec PSU I realized that it was my CPU fan making all the noise.

the fan in question is the stock set-up that came with an AMD 1800+.

A. can I replace the fan only? If so any recommendations?
B. i dont mind replacing fan AND heatsink but I really dont want to spend much since I will be upgrading CPU and mobo in a month or two. No overclocking here, it's all stock.

What would you recommend I do here?

I recommend a speeze cooler, or cheaper still, a zalman rpm adjuster. Lower your rpms to about 3000 at idle.
