Is there a better camera within that price range out there? I like the canon lines, but I'm not sure if they match up to the sony. Let me know what you thinkg. Thanks for reading.

Lookup Olympus;

The D-575 might do her justice, but it comes in at ~230$ at first glance.

Also, don't overlook a Sony Mavica - the breed that writes to the little CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Cheap "film", and instant backup. The newest incarnation, the MVC-CD350, can be had new straight from them for ~400$, but I'm sure you can find it cheaper or older ones (while still excellent cameras) for even cheaper.

(Ok. I give up. The URLs are right, but they link me to microsoft.com. I hate this; enough trying to fix it!)

Bad links.....

I suggested either Sony, Canon, or Olympus.....just don't know about models that hit her price range.

Waste of money. It's too slow. For $100.00 more she can get the DSC-V1 at Sears:
 • Its Super HAD? CCD image sensor delivers massive 5.0 megapixel resolution (effective). The 4X optical/4X Smart Zoom Carl Zeiss? Vario-Sonnar® lens gives you exceptional control. Put a host of built-in, automatic features to use, or take your pictures the old-fashioned way. Sony lets your creativity take the reigns. Other features include 5-Area Multi-Point AF (Auto-Focus), NightShot/NightFraming IR Assist, and Multi-Pattern and Program Shift, which lets you conveniently select Aperture/Shutter combinations while in the Program AE mode. The DSC-V1 also features a lightning-fast USB 2.0 interface for high-speed transfer, and an external flash hotshoe.
 • Carl Zeiss lens with 4X optical zoom
 • Hologram Autofocus Assist (will NEVER miss focusing a shot, even in total darkness, let alone dim lighting)
 • Hot shoe for external flash (unheard of on small cameras)
 • Pocket size yet not too small
 • Flawless point & shoot performance, with full manual overrides...
 • 5MP means you'll still have plenty of good, high res. image left, even after substantial cropping.
 • Buying it at Sears means returns are super easy, but I doubt that will happen.
Don't waste $200, get it right the first time for only $300.
