An excellent law. I heard of studies that rank cellphones as just behind drunk driving as an accident factor.

Until all states come to their senses and pass similar laws, I think the insurance companies should jump on this bigtime, if the regs permit. High insurance surcharges for those who insist on having these dangerous devices in their cars. Pass the cost of this activity directly onto the offending class of drivers.

Frankly, the only thing that surprises me about this law is that New York will apparently be the first state to actually adopt it.

Yes, it is a good law - and if it could be properly monitored, may well save lives.
I just don't get the "MORE LEGISLATION! WHERE WILL IT ALL END (IN CAPITALS WITH LOTS OF EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!)" raves. Do you people also insist on your right to free speech on your cell-phones in aircraft?....and too f!#*ing bad if the plane goes down? No-one has endorsed the banning of cell-phones in vehicles - what HAS been endorsed is the responsible use of cell-phones in vehicles - i.e. by the use of hands-free kits or similar technology. Don't want to spend the money? Then get off the road for the duration of the call.

...I think those other "Blue" states will soon follow.

I still don't know whether I'm in favor of the actual specific law or not, but the what people are trying to say is that

YOU CAN KILL SOMEONE OR SOMEONE CAN KILL YOU WHILE DRIVING DISTRACTED

People, this should NOT be ignored.

Many claim that they are good drivers and follow the rules and that is well and good. But if you are the slightest bit distracted and you need to make a sudden split-second decision to save yourself or someone else, in all probability your reaction WILL BE DELAYED OR YOU WILL NOT REACT PROPERLY AT ALL.

A woman in Pennsylvania lost her little girl because some guy picked up his phone, ran the red light and smashed into her car, killing the little girl who was safely tucked in her car seat.
This woman followed the rules and expected the oncoming car to do so as well.
WHY DIDN'T HE?

An accident can happen much faster than anyone thinks. Didn't anyone watch that documentary on how they tested several proclaimed "good drivers" and gave them tasks they had to accomplish WHILE driving, and yet still follow the rules of the road and maintain proper speed?
The testers placed several surprise traffic situations along the road to see how these people would handle them.
NOT ONE OF THEM PASSED THE TEST WITH ACCEPTABLE RESULTS.
In fact the majority of them failed horribly. Why? because they were distracted.

If they pass a law against phones they pass a law. But regardless, you can very well just quickly and safely pull over somewhere and make a call. For heaven's sake it's for other's safety as well as your own.
