I'm driving on the expressway and all of a sudden I noticed the needle dropped and then realized it doesnt work.
Everything else seems to be working fine, except for the needle. Also, the mileage stays put at whatever it is
and my friends are telling me either the fuse blew out or a wire is loose. I dont even know where to begin. Have to wait
for dad. I'm afraid to drvie it.

On a modern car, it's VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor. You may notice the automatic transmission shifting a little differently too.

This car may be old enough to have a plain old speedometer cable, in which case, the cable has most likely broken.

It was weird becuz at one time I was makign a right turn and it was kinda hard to turn the steering wheel. It was like not having power steering! anyways, shut it off and then started the car back up and the turning is just fine, but the needle is still dead. needs some viagra or something.

My mom did that. Her speedometer broke when I took the car down to LV to Comdex '98. Never fixed it (though I offered to). The mileage guage stopped working, too.

the same thing happened on my 1989 Mazda 929 a few years ago :Q

I drove it for months before I got it fixed. I pretty much knew how fast I was going by looking at the tachometer. In my car, 80 MPH was exactly 3000RPM, so I guestimated up and down from there. :)

it is the speedometer cable.... cost ~ $175 to replace at the Mazda dealership
