UPDATE:
Just got a call from the body shop -- they're looking at minimum $9.5k in repairs. Appernetly the frame is a little banged up. The insurance adjuster is going to come take a look at it tomorrow or wednesday and let us know what to do from here.... As it is though, the repairs are close to 90% of the cars value. I'm not thinking that its looking too good for the sentra :(

NSFW :(... okay, maybe safe for work.. but sad anyways.

I'll get pics tomorrow when I get a look at it in the daylight at the shop where it was towed too.
Anyhow, Yeah... not sure exactly how it all went down, but basically I was on an onramp getting ready to get on the highway, probably going about 50mph (ramp speed limit was probably 45, highway speed at that point was 55). hit something on the road which caused my front end to lose traction and begin to sip towards then inside barrier on the ramp (road was still wet from rain earlier). Didnt want to make any harsh moves to cause the car to over correct or spin out, so i let off the gas and turned the steering wheel in the direction i wanted to be going - However i was already too close to the barrier, clipped the left front of my car which forced my car to spin around and slide up the ramp (with the nose of my car now facing on coming traffic) -- my car hit the outside barrier and slid to a stop on the side of the ramp.

I wasn't hurt at all (the airbag didnt go off, and my laptop hadnt even slip off the passenger seat) - however the cement barrier wasn't so nice my car. Both the front and rear crumple zones to a pretty big hit and the entire drivers side of the car is thrashed from riding along the guard rail. Somehow though, the car managed to start up and the tow truck driver was actually able to drive the car off the rail and up to the back of his truck.

So now i'm trying to figure out how bad it has to be for insurance to total the car. It's in pretty rough shape and i really think it is going to be a huge hassle if they want to repair it.

The car is an '02 nissan sentra se-r spec v, comparable models are selling for about 13k on carmax.
the front and rear crumple zones are crumpled, engine compartment mostly intact - but pretty much all my fluids were pouring out from underneath. Front and rear bumpers ripped off. No windows shattered and the airbag was not deployed.

the police showed up and filed an accident report and called the tow truck. I was not charged with anything.

cliff notes:
- '02 nissan se-r spec v lost traction, hit the gaurd rail.
- i'm not hurt - car on other hand is looking very rough
- will talk to insurance tomorrow - but trying to get an idea of what im in for. I really dont want to go through the hassle of repairing the car - would rather just have it totaled and buy a new car.
- pics tomorrow when i get a look at it in daylight

anyhow, i'm extremely depressed. I really loved that car and will hate to see it put to rest. It's a sad day for a nissan fanboy :(

I believe insurance companies decide if a car is totalled by the cost of repairs against the total value of the car. Since yours is relatively new, and apparently is still in good shape mechanically (considering it could still be started and driven immediately after the accident), I doubt it will be considered totalled by any insurance company.

heh... depends on how this effects my insurance. I just bought my fiance a Mazda6, which i really really like, and chances are that's what i'd end up getting one for myself.

I'll find out more tomorrow - but from my unexperienced eyes, - i'd be willing to bet that thier is in excess of 6000 dollars worth of damage... little over half the cars worth accord to KBB.com. (kbb estimates its worth around 11,000)--

i really dont feel like dealing with repairing it -- especially knowing that it will be nearly worthless down the road if i ever wanted to sell it. But i hate to see it go, becuase i'm very attached to that car.

They're going for huge discounts up here. A GS V6 (anything but the wagon) with minor equipment and AT is only CDN$25K. :Q

thats was what i was thinking -- although i'm not sure what i could have been charged with other than possibly speeding (assuming the onramp speed limit was 45) -

i'm more worried about how this will effect my insurance payments... i dont think state farm is going to like hearing about this a whole lot.

Yeah, I think you're stuck with it... repair costs need to be almost as much or exceeding its value, particularly on a newer model. Repair and go for the trade-in, I guess.

Something like Failure to control your vehicle. I'm not making that up.

Your insurance will go up. I doubt it'll be pretty.

Affect. :p

yeah, i'll have to wait and see what they do with the nissan first -- and assuming they total it, i'll have to see what they give me for it before i start thinking about what cars i will actually be able to afford.

thankfully i've never had a speeding ticket / accident / or anything on my record before and my current rates aren't that high... I'm completely expecting them to double though.

Maybe i'll just ditch the car a while and stick to riding the Ninja full time... I'm sure that'd be really fun when it drops down into the 20's next week. :Q

Wow. When your insurance goes up, try seeing if another company will give you a better rate. How old are you?

I just gotta say though, Spork gets its revenge. Kidding aside, glad to hear you're ok man.
